I had the Mustang question a few times on my 308; had one elderly European man comment "nice Porsche!" - told him it was a Ferrari to which he replied:" AH - Schumacher!!"

Elderly lady waited for me to come out of a store to ask me "that's a cute car - what is it?" one time.

kids ALWAYS knew what it was, and it was always funny to see the look on their Dad's face at gas stations when the kids would yell "look daddy! a Ferrari" as poor dad was filling up the family mini-van....(think Chevy Chase....)

One thing does confuse the heck out of me though, and that's the number of people (almost as many as with the F car) who make positive comments and thumbs up gestures when I'm driving my 914 VW-Porsche!!

I just thought of this. My mom is not really a car person per se. But b/c of my love of exotics she now can tell the difference b/w a Ferrari and Lamborghini. One time she saw a Pantera and said it couldn't have been a Lamborghini or Ferrari but it looked kinda like one. I showed her a picture and that's exactly what it was. Pretty funny.

well this thread is more about naivete than stupidity, but as a consolation just remember... 50% of people are dumber than average.
i love the 914... only ever seen 2 on the road here. my car (X1/9) has been mistaken for one a couple times, odd considering if you even know of the 914 you really should know your cars. but mostly people think it's a TR7... funny thing is they don't even ask, they just go "oh my Dad had a Triumph years ago".

If they're only that smart, then they wont key the paint job, while it's sitting there.

Heh heh. At 6'2'' and 240lbs, with beard and 'high forehead' and not exactly the calender boy type, this is not a frequent occurrance. But I do wear the remaining manes in a ponytail, and got chatted up in the supermarket by an old guy talking to my back. It did not affect me too badly ;)
