    Hello all!

My dream would be to buy a 355 GTB. I think I could get a pretty good one for about $100,000 cash.

The big question is insurance. I'm 25. Does anyone have an idea what insurance would cost me? Also, is it better to just pay cash or finance? It would be my only car (I live downtown Toronto - I take the bus everywhere) and would use it extensively during the summer.

If anyone can recommend an insurance agent/company I would appreciate it. Also, if you would rather PM me that's great too.

    Thanks,

    Ronald

Ronald, I can suggest State Farm, they are the only company that give a crap about being "over 25" and giving discounts. Everyone thinks that if they're 25 their insurance will drop. --- B.S.!!!!

State Farm is the only one that does that. Put your condo insurance with them and they'll give u a better deal. They also have good rates on motorcycles too. You'll be paying around $4000-$5000 a year if you're lucky.

5,000? That's it? Wow, pleasantly surprised! I have a good record - not accidents/tickets or anything.

Don't quote me on that!! Thats "IF YOU'RE LUCKY". I also suggest titling and insuring the car under your parents for greater savings, if possible?

Call GEICO, that little gecko bastard....

    One more thing..

If you buy an older f355 from anyone else except a Ferrari Dealer, make sure you know a good ferrari mechanic first!

If its got more than 30 k on it, bring it to a mechanic and have him check the valves, lifters etc. Also get the timing belts changed ASAP, if it wasn't done already.

    Rather than offer advice, I'd rather share an experience that may convey useful information to you;

    1) My first ferrari was a 98 355 spider, with 18K kilometers. What a thrill; but the shock came when the recurrent problem of 355s came up in the form of cracked exhaust manifolds. $4K for each one each installed by a ferrari dealer. Then a cat converter went; another $4K, then other things. I spent $20K in my first year to keep my darling 355 pristine. Yes, fixes at unauthorized ferrari mechanics and perhaps aftermarket components would have reduced my bill, but it all comes down to jaw dropping shocks just the same. So, the bottom line is, make sure some of those things are done -- ESPECIALLY THE EXHAUST MANIFOLDS -- on that $100K car you hope to purchase. Even a pre-purchase inspection didn't protect me from all the expense. And bear in mind, when you spend $100K for your dream car, a $5K repair bill seems like an insult. After all a $30K Honda CRV (which I have) will go 10 years on oil changes before requesting ANY significant maintenance bills.

    2) if you can't afford the insurance, don't get the car. Believe me, the insurance, even if $5K at 25 yrs. of age is a minor issue. Why? Because it's a predictable $5k charge you can plan for in advance, not a $5K bill at Xmas time when you're challenged to pay your credit cards. In short, what's not predictable is the jaw dropping maintenance bills.

Good luck and I hope you find a good (I mean excellent) one. PS, still love ferrari and, as an owner of a Challenge Stradale, I continue to order extra thick check books.

Then again, get a brand new ZO6, its worth it, and you'll have 10 g's left over to lower it and mod the engine!

I was only suggesting that to increase performance and make it a little different since he's settling for a z06, not the ferrari.

The zo6 actually outperforms the 355 and 360!!

That's about $2/km if you drive it like most of us (2K Km) ...almost as much as you'll be spending on gas!

I have full comprehensive on a $40k replacement value on my Mondi and pay $800.-/year, regardless of mileage driven, and not only "for pleasure", i.e. I can drive it to work whenever I want without any risk.

BUT, I'm a wee bit older than you. I guess experience does count...;)

First off, thanks to everyone who offered advice and shared their experiences.

Secondly, I know of most of the major issues that pop up and have budgeted for them. I know I'm not the most vocal member on the forums, but I've been a member of FCHAT for a long time (I think four years at least). I visit the forums almost everyday (OK, sometimes just to look at the bikini thread). I have been mentally preparing myself for the day I buy a Ferrari for over ten years. This won't be a light decision by any means. I would never buy a 355 unless I had plenty of cash (and cash flow) left over to cover the cost of maintenance and those ugly suprises that are guaranteed to come. I have worked hard, been very tight with money, and have researched Ferraris extensively. I'm not an authority on the matter by any stretch of the imagination; I just want to communicate that I'm not some punk kid that woke up one day wanting to buy a new toy.

There is light at the end of the tunnel and I'm very excited!

Ronald, my fellow f chat member, your last post was very inspiring to all of us.

But one comment though...from one young person to another - If you have worked so long and hard, please invest your hard earned money wisely!!

Between me and you, I am starting a new air conditioning business in Alaska, do you want in??
I'm gonna need 75 grand, but I promise you'll get back 100g in 2 years.....

    LOL :)

There are plenty of good cars out. Just follow the history and ownership and have the car inspected correctly. Sounds like you are doing the proper pre purchase planning, and you will most surely end up with the car of you're dream. And its not as expensive as all non owners seem to know.
    Good luck in you're search M8 !!
