Can anyone get insurance from USAA or only members? I don't qualify for membership.
John, I just did this and just confirmed the deal. NJ requires minimal liability coverage stays on while in storage. USAA lifts the comp/collision for on the road coverage but maintains it in storage (in my garage). SO if something should happen to the car in my garage or driveway I have the full coverage even though its in storage. It costs $10.83 a month for a 30 day period and I can turn it on and off via a phone app. They send you stickers to put on the dashboard to remind you to turn it off if youre going to drive it on the road. Pretty neat deal. $70 month when its on , $11/month in storage. I could remove the comp/coll. if I wanted and it would be like $3/month This is USAA with 2k deduct.
In NYS, State farm had a program in which you could drop liability up to 6 months a year for non-use. I don't know how they did it because in NYS, if you generally need to turn in plates to do that. I used to do it for my vette and when I switched to Geico I gave that up (Geico does not offer it).
CT has the same basic law on minimum liability but in CT if you claim storage the look the other way. Some insurance co's require that you sign a document stating that the car won't be driven, other don't. Basically it's up to the insurance co to notify the state if you drop liability but with seasonal use car and such everybody just looks the other way. Cost me about $20 each for 6 months on the 355 and 308 when in storage. When on the road the 355 is cheapest, then the 308, then my '02 Toyota pickup. They are all in the $200+ for 6 months. The Cayman is about twice any of the others, go figure.
Dave, I have GEICO and they let me drop everything but comp when in storage. Must be at least 30 days though.
