I'm searching for a 512 TR for my friend and am interested to know your opinions on this. I've done a little bit of homework on this car from this forum and read some reviews, but wanted a 2nd opinion.

From the description, it looks like a major service has been performed last year from an Ferrari dealer. Is the major service time consensus on this model 3 years, or can it really be 5 years?

If someone knows of this particular car and could fill me in with any details you may have, I would much appreciate it.

    Thanks!

My understanding is that sometimes "major service" is not necessarily the timing belts. Before sure to confirm and reconfirm this. There are several threads that have discussed this thread in the past.

I am on the 5 year cycle myself. The main thing is the cam belts. You have to pull the engine to get to them to inspect them so you may as well replace them at that time. The valves need adjusting at 30,000 miles but this car only has 8,000 miles on it so you are probably good there. I can tell you that the cars that are driven regularly do better than the garage queens for some reason. My guess is that an 8,000 mile car may have a few minor issues that will pop up within the first year of ownership if it gets driven much. Good luck with the purchase, the car looks great!

I bought my yellow 1994 512tr from them in July this year. They were very pleasent to deal with and were helpful with any and all my questions. The car was exactly as described and I am very pleased. FYI my research on a major is that when someone says 'Major' it is an engine out full belt service with peripherals. You also want to check that atleast the water pump seals were replaced and the clutch was inspected. Also there were 2 recalls:

    Seat belts
    Fuel lines

You want to make sure these were done as the fuel lines can cause fire.

I had a top body man from the MO area check the whole car for signs of accidents/paint work. I also had a Ferrari trained tech go over the vehicle.

Also, and very important, I had them fax me all the records for the car, especially the most recent major they claimed, and I called the shop and spoke to the owner at length about my vehicle. He was very helpful in confirming the work was done. That is really the best you can do. I have all the names and numbers of the people I used so if you need any help PM me with your # and I'll give it all to you.

Looks like a great car and if it is as described, I would think you can pick it up for around $105-110K. Good luck!!!

I would also make sure the valve seals are done too. That is a commonly overlooked item that can cause you to smoke later on. But as most here have said, a major is a full engine out will all seals, gaskets and belts done. I would also add in the hoses while you are at it along with all filters.
