Our local track - Harris Hill Road (1.8 miles track with lots of turns few straights) decided to host a 3 hour Enduro with the following restrictions; car had to be street legal and driven to the track, and would have the run the whole 3 hours on only ONE tank of gas. Whoever covers the most distance within 3 hours wins, run out of gas regardless of distance traveled, you DNF.

So everyone showed up this past Saturday for the fun event, there were a total of 14 cars (I think) – including several Miatas, Mini Coopers, Honda CRXs, Mazda 3, VW Bettle (new model), Pontiac GTO (new model), Volvo S80 (!!), Porsche GT3, Porsche 356 (race trim), Ferrari 456M – a very eclectic mix reflecting the bias of the attendees. Needless to say that smart money was on the Miatas and Minis, and a good laugh was had at the prospect of a 5.5L Ferrari running out of gas half way though the Enduro….

Anyone wants to venture how things turned? Clue, the pace was definitely not “fuel efficiency” focused with lap time around 1:36-37 (a good Spec Miata run 1:32s as reference) with frequent 1.33-34s..., and it was a tie for first!

Nope, while everyone was running at a good pace, The 456M and the Porsche GT3 ended tied first - same lap, exact same distant after 3 hours. All the other cars were 2 to 10 laps down. The only difference between the Ferrari and the Porsche is the latter only had 12 miles of gas left while the Ferrari made it home without a refill (another 35 miles!).

That is correct, tank is 29 gallons according to the manual plus a couple of extra in the filler neck makes for 30+. Three hours, lap times around 1:35 for a total of 194.7 miles, even at 7mpg you'll have gas left over. Actually, I did a drive 4 weeks ago that averaged over triple digits over 300 miles still got 11 mpg - better than any hybrid out there!!

I would have loved that challenge in my 2002 Corvette. 19 Gallon tank and some silly fuel mileage -- I've averaged 35mpg on the hilly 75 mile drive between Oly and Seattle. In my '99 when I lived in Houston, I regularly got 35-37 mpg at 75mph cruising in 6th to go towards Galveston to get to the autocross track. With an extra gallon (actually probably somewhere between two or three) hiding in the filler neck, the twin tank crossover pipe and the lines to the front, the car could probably eclipse 700 miles on one tank of premium!!!

Plus it's a good car for racing (grunt, handling, good gear ratios). With the car's attributes, it certainly would have done better in this challenge than my 328 GTS...and might have given the 456 a good run for the title.
