I am selling my 308 for an upcoming Army Reserve deployment, and I am going to buy either a 348 or 355 upon return. I have been seriously looking for around a month now.

There is a nice looking 348 on ebay at Charles Schmitt in St Louis
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ferrari-348-Spider-1995-Ferrari-348-Spider-23K-Most-Desired-Red-w-Tan_W0QQitemZ160021877235QQihZ006QQcategoryZ6212QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I confirmed financing with the bank this morning in case I came across a good example during my deployment so that I did not have to wait. With this in mind, I called Schmitt to inquire about the service history. He told me that the 15K service was performed in approx '01. I then stated that it would be due soon for the next major based off of the 5 yrs. He then told me that I did not know sh*t, and that people like me spend too much time on the internet. He said that this car did not need service for 7K more miles, and that Ferrari did not know what they were talking about either. He then went on to state that he did not need to sell me his car, and then hung up! wow!!

Was I wrong to state this about the service? I have spent hours researching this topic, and 5 yrs (or 3) seems to be fairly accepted. Maybe he is right and I do spend too much time on the internet...

Informed buyers are a bad dealer's worst nightmare. Not everything on the internet is right, but what you mentioned is the consensus of opinion on this site.

We all generally spend too much time on the internet. I am not sure what that has to do with the service recommendations for a Ferrari 348. Schmitt is bad news, consider yourself lucky that they were rude and did not try to sell you one of their cars. They have low prices, and there is a reason for it. Stay away.

They are idiots and you should be glad you didn't buy from them. True idiots.

The ONLY thing that saves their business is the internet. If it wasn't for that, they wouldn't have their endless supply of uninformed suckers to keep buying from them.

Actually owners manuel says 52,500 miles for major service. Ferrari service update says every 3 years regardless of miles. Search the archives and you will get all sorts of answers.

I wonder why the dealer was so defensive? Maybe more wrong with the car than needing service.

Good comments about Schmidt. You kind of get that feeling though, if u read through all his listings, like when they are trying to get top dollar for a rebuilt C2 Corvette that doesn't have an original engine. How'd they miss that?

For the 348 (and all belt-driven engines), it used to be 5 years for the major and in between for the minor (valve shims), but somewhere during my ownership, I might add, they changed the recommendation to 3 year cycles and no minor. Personally, I have never had a problem with the old schedule and that's what I use. The mileage markers are, for most ppl, not applicable.

Maybe they are just full of "Schmidt"!

I received similar responses by e-mail from them in the past.

I think it's best to stay away!

Check with Jim Lyons in La Jolla, CA at www.sportscarcompany.com.

He's a great person, he has nice cars, and he's very honest. He would never treat you as did Schmidt!

When you speak to Jim let him know I referred you. He'll like that!

He already owes me dinner, and now I'll get him for 2 if you buy from him!

He's very nice, and his wife, Colleen, works with him and answers the phone.

    Great folks.

I just got back from a major service on my 89 348tb. At 23k miles since last major, the belts looked great, belt tensioners were a littly gritty (replaced them with Hill Engineering parts.....ten times better...will post pictures), new water pump. Last service was 7 years ago and 22k miles. By the way, the 89 book calls for major every 15k miles.....thats my data point for the list.

Spencer, I wish you luck on your deployment. I bought my 348 when I got back from my 1 year in the "sandbox". I had to spend all of that tax free money and combat pay I got from Uncle Sam! Anyway, the 348 is a great car.

Thanks everyone for the responses. This is a great forum for sharing info that might otherwise be discovered after a great deal of expense. I think I'll stick with one of these established dealers, or hopefully from a known member here who is ready to sell.

The more I look, I think I will end up with a well-sorted, later model 348. I like the styling, and the prices are pretty good. I'm in the process of selling the 308 so that I'll be ready when I find a "great" 348. Now I just have to finish convincing the wife that this is a "reward" for my deployment!
