At the FCA San Antonio Chapter monthly meeting today, I had a conversation with a local guy who owns several Ferraris. He drove his green '91 Testarossa to the meeting this month, so we got to talking about "weird" Ferraris that grow on you.

Naturally, the FF came up - hard to imagine, I know! - and he mentioned a Ferrari sponsored track event he participated in that used an FF as the pace car. He said, as hard as they tried, none of the civilians in their 458's and F12's - and one Enzo! - could even keep up with the FF with the professional driver. Not even close.

    Talk about an eye opener.

    Cheers,

    Geo

Doesn't surprise me, particularly on anything other than a warm dry track.

Driver makes a big difference, but I get your point.

Average driver in 458 is not likely to be close to the pace of pro driver in 360.

He also said several of the guys had serious track hours, so not average owners. They were the only ones qualified for that particular group. He watched from the sidelines, with the rest of the average guys.

On professional drivers and the difference between them and most everyone else:

Some years ago, I was doing serious track time at Bridgehampton in the NE US in my modified big block Corvette. I was getting pretty good, or so I thought. This was before technology so I was on my own, doing controlled power drifts, exiting turns with plenty of power, gradually getting faster and more skilled. I pulled in to let the brakes cool for awhile. A friend of a friend of mine, a professional driver whose name quite a few will recognize, asked if he could take the car out, and if so I would be welcome in the passenger seat. To this day I remember how completely different and so much quicker he was than I. It was then that I realized that I was a duffer... and probably always would be. It hasn't stopped me from enjoying the cars though.

I had no idea the dark metallic green Testarossa would be such a hit! If I had, I would have snapped a few more. He actually lifted the hood and told us the color's name, but it has slipped my mind (Something I'd never heard of before).

I generally don't care for Testarossas, but this one had a very cool vibe to it. There were actually TWO at the meeting. This one's a red 1990, which does less for me.

    Cheers,

    George

I'm not a track guy - with cars - so this is good to know. It's basically the same story with motorcycles, but in that world I have met a few talented amateurs who could at least maintain a pace with a professional rider.

In any case, my estimation of the FF continues to go up almost daily.

    Cheers,

    George

The FF is certainly one of the most amazing car produced in the past 5 years.
It has grown on me and driving it has been a great experience.

Even a track guy with good skills driving a 458 is likely to be blown away by a pro driver in a 360. Unfortunately for all of us (track but still average in comparison) drivers (wannabe pilots) ;)

If you ever get a chance to go for a ride with a pro driver (not just someone with a lot of track time but someone who races in professional events) you will realize just how much more performance a truly skilled driver can extract out of a vehicle. It's an eye-opening experience to say the least. The car does things you never thought would be possible.
