Looks like a maintenance test flight with no destination other than the originating airport. Seems that they have been doing this for the past few days.

There are twin engine rules for flights like that. You have to be able to reach an alternate in 90 minutes or so single engine along the entire route of flight.

There are a couple of fairweather ice strips to their left - they recently landed a 787 on one of them.

A mate of mine recently got the job managing one of them.

It depends, of course, on whether they are carrying passengers or not. I don't remember if ETOPS is required for cargo or not.

This is a fantastic video about doing a very similar flight, in a LatAm 767... the relevant part starts about 9 minutes in (the first part is about their 787 training)... incidentally, these guys are the real deal:

After watching the video from inside one of the storm chasers i thought back to the times when the wings were disintegrating on the Lockheed Electra and now , after a rework, they are flying through the storms without a worry. I worked with the Boeing engineer that figured out what the problem was with the Electra. I was a training specialist and i was assigned to set up a program to describe the analyzation and redesign of the engine nacelle and wing. It turned out that the engineer whose name was Pete, was a woman, an expert in flutter analysis.
