    I should have made myself more clear, the first Porsche produced.. Not the entire line.

    Yes, the prototype 356 was mid engined, and so the first 356 was neither a flat six, nor rear engined either...

    Even the very first Porsche, the 356, had a boxer engine. Today, the 911, Boxster and Cayman models are all powered by boxer engines. Characteristic features include a low centre of gravity, spontaneous response and exceptionally lively performance.
