I checked the oil level first with the engine cold and off and there was just a tiny bit at the end of the stick.
I then went for a drive and did the full and correct oil check procedure (AC on full, 4000 rpm 1 min...).
I then checked the oil at 2.5 min and got a very nice and clear oil level just a bit below minimum mark, exactly where I like it to be. Repeated and got the exact same result.
    Here is the interesting part:
Just to be OCD I checked it a 3rd time, and now beyond the recommended 3 min point, perhaps ~3.5 min and the stick was bone dry. I couldn’t believe it so I carefully checked it 3 more times, carefully inserting oil stick and pulling it out carefully, etc. Each time the stick was without ANY oil on it. I know they say to check it between 2-3 min while idling but I figured beyond 3 min the level would be artificially high if anything...not bone dry!
    Weird!
Have any of you experienced similar??
@AEHaas @SeattleStew...I know you two have monitored your oil carefully so I’d be curious what you guys think about this.

Could be that the scavenge pumps refilling the oil tank are aided by some small pressure in the engine at high rpm and then at extended idle the pressure has dissipated so the effective level in the tank drops as the pressure pump supplies oil to the engine.

Another possibility is that the volume of oil in the tank measures higher as gases are mixed with the oil from the extended 4k rev. After a period of time at idle the gases have separated in the tank and the effective oil level appears lower.

Another reason it could be is the temperature regulator changing the oil volume/capacity outside of the tank.

Solid state summarized it well. I have also experienced this when checking the oil cold, and outside of the time intervals. The reservoir tank level will go up and down even with the same amount of oil in the system. It can be a little unsettling when checking the oil level, but it really is that fussy.

Just remember, fill to minimum. You’ll overfill if you fill much past minimum.

    Thanks guys!
I actually try to keep it a little below the minimum level.
It goes to show you that the 2-3 min window is NOT to be taken lightly.
I am going to be religious about checking it properly after every service too.
(Well, this really is only an issue for us owners that actually drive these cars and rack up the miles! :) I’m now at 9000 miles.)

I crossed 18k in mine last week :D. Really is a shame most don’t go out and enjoy their 812s. They are missing out.
