    If one has been around vintage British cars at all, it is very likely that the "Thackeray" washer has been encountered. It is a spring washer used for "soft mounting" various mechanical bits, often carburettors.

    I was reading a club newsletter from an English vintage car club and came across this:

    "Named after the 'laser type' metal cutting light invented by Scotsman Angus Thacker for cutting high quality steel into double coiled spring washers. It was called the Thacker Ray technique.

    Interesting. I never thought about the process. I would have guessed that they were "wound" in some way. Also, I had no idea that there was some kind of industrial laser that long ago.
