I need to remove the flat horizontal trim piece under the rear window (the "package shelf"). It is the leather covered sheet metal part under the shoulder harness upper attachment bolts. I've been tracking the most annoying rattle and buzz (it is louder than my very open exhaust) and I believe that it is coming from under this piece of trim.

Anyway I've got the belts undone, and the B pillar trim off, the trim part is a little lose but is not comings off. I have not removed the joint cover in the center, and I'm not sure how the main trim parts are held in. It should snap out or are slide out of a hook system, but it is not budging and of course - I don't want to damage it as it is one of the few trim parts that I don't need to replace....

I searched the archives w/o luck. Any advice on how to take this out would be appreciated.

    Hello from Germany,

what you describe reminds me of a similar noise on my 308 GTB. Do you feel that the noise is coming mainly from the passenger side ? If so; before you remove the trim try relocating the A/C compressor lines.
In my case this was the culprit. These hoses touch the right side fuel tank and sometimes vibrations cause such annoying noises. Slight alterations of the way the hoses take, eliminated the noise on my car, but I had to play with the fittings on the A/C compressor.

    Best Regards

I agree with Martin. F-Chat saved me on this one too. Buy pipe insulating foam at Home Depot (the tubular stuff you slide over copper pipes to keep them from freezing) and run them over the A/C lines. Any money says that this is your culprit.

As for removing the trim (since you asked), peel back the door seal weatherstripping and it will reveal a number of pop rivets. These rivets need to be drilled out to remove the B-Pillar trim. As for the shelf and sides (around the rear glass), these have studs on the back of them and are held in with nuts. All the nuts are acessible from the engine compartment. Good luck with the project but check the A/C lines first.

i forgot to mention, that it's also possible, that the a/c lines touch the body inside the right side fender, expecially in the region around the right side intake duct.
This causes annoying noises as well, even louder than in my case, when they have vibrated against the gas tank.
I could fiddle with the a/c fittings, because my a/c was due for maintenance anyway.
If this is not possible, because of a well working a/c and you dont' want to touch anything, fitting foam insulation is a great option.

    Best Regards

    Martin

Thanks Martin and Robert - my noise is from the passenger side! I had poked arround in the engine compartment looking for the buzz before, but I like your suggestions. I'll take a hard look at the A/C lines and see if that will fix it. Thanks for the help.

If your noise is from the passenger side and very loud it is for sure the A/C lines rubbing. My car's previous owner's mechanic billed a fourtune to fix the rattle and never found it. Once I bought my car, F-chat saved me and my fix cost exactly 35 cents and took no more than 15 minutes.
