Could someone please tell me the manufacturer and number of the large so-called "hot-start "relay on the side of the 400i Series 1 relay board..I'll try to source it out for the rest of us ..Thank you all so much in advance..Jacques..p.s.(either in this thread or by p.m.)

Is the relay that you are discussing the (big) one labeled "25" on page 112 of the 176/79 OM?

Yes, that's the position for the "25" relay, and they really mangled the English translation for it on your label and in the 176/79 OM (although they improved the translation in the 250/82 OM somewhat where they called it "relay for starting") -- it should really be called something like "starter command signal relay" (it's a relay that's meant to only allows the +12V from the ignition key Pos III terminal 50 to reach the starter solenoid if the automatic gear selector lever is in the "Park" or "Neutral" position).

Would you please confirm if the wire colors in the relay socket match the wire colors shown in this jpeg (and the white/red wire could/might be swapped with the black wire with no ill effect):

If so, in a pinch, you can just use the same Bosch 0 332 014 113 relay that's used for the fuel pumps without much trouble. IMO, they were trying to use a 40A rated relay in that position (rather than a 30A rated relay) or maybe a relay that is more resistant to arcing (although there's no indication of this in the symbol used on the schematic) to get more life out of it -- but, in the long run, it might be easier just to replace a 0 332 014 113 relay more often than trying to track down a special, oddball relay ;).

Steve I think you're talking about the wrong relay. The relay in question controls the injection. When the engine is hot the car floods if this relay isn't working and won't start.
    The Bosch part # is 0-335-322-003. It is a 8x21w relay with terminals 49a, 31, and 49.
Jaques has asked for mine but if he doesn't want it I'll take a reasonable offer for it (McCann wants $125).

My bad -- I (finally) found what you're talking about on the schematic -- item 190. Please ignore that other message.

    BOSCH
    a figure that I can't read on my picture, then 335 322 003
    below 12V 8*21W

    Same as Dave's in fact.

I did some research yesterday triggered by the thread on this ongoing search for this elusive relay. A Bosch distributor called Bosch yesterday and the told him that the part number is valid but is licensed for sale ONLY in Germany..However..upon further research on a long time suspission of mine is that the three contact #s 49/31/49a is a common turn signal flasher. My relay board has not had this relay installed for the 12 years that I have owned it ( no wonder my hot start issues) and I "assumed" that it was just a blank port..Dave put me straight on this. I won't be in a position to drive my 1980 400i for a few days but I'm going to test drive one of these relays soon.. maybe someone can do it sooner. I know that we all don't need to spend blindly on many of the items for for our cars..This relay is available everywhere for $10-$12 at all part stores..One example is the "WEHRLE" brand relay # 54327102 their part #P2066-63506 at Pro Street. Fits most MBs and most BMWs..@$9.71. To me, the size of the relay body isn't as important as the function, and the large size and weight of the original probably contributes to the reported vibrating loose syndrom. I hope this is of some help. Respectfully..Jacques..p.s...Another term for this relay is pulse generator..

Well, I met jacques some weeks ago, had a drink and he asked me to check if the ref on the relay was the same as Dave's. So I did it. Any problem?
