    Testarossa ECU intermittent warning light

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had one of the two ECUs replaced at the time I had the 30K and water pump re-done. I think that was 7-12 and it has been fine since.
This morning the 1-6 was coming on and going off with an attendant buzzer.

Doesn't feel like something is wrong with the cats, as the car is running very smoothly, and everything seems fine.

What happens if we disconnect the ECUs completely?

And where is the best place to get a replacement (Ricambi?) should it simply be failing electrically?

How much is that ecu? I have the same problem on my car light 1-6 comes on when it is warming up and finally goes off ( no buzzer ) I spoke to a Ferrari tech about it and he said it was nothing to worry about , if it bothered me I should disconnect the light because the part that controls that is very expensive. Sounds like strange advice to me. Hopefully someone has a better answer than that.

I've had this same light lit up for some time now for no apparent reason. Same goes for the 7-12 that occasionally turns on. Someone told me about some hose or wire that losens and could lead to this. Any suggestions?

How do you ignore the BUZZER?!!! Or how did you disconnect it?

I don't mind the light, and if fact prefer having it, in case there ever was a problem with my cats. I wouldn't even mind replacing the ECU if it wasn't so damned expensive. Just had the car looked over completely when they did my 30K engine out, checked emissions, cats, EVERYTHING, within the last 700 miles (3 months) so it is just the one ECU I haven't replaced. I'd drive with the light on if the buzzer would go out for a while to absorb the 30K plus water pump preventative damage costs before dropping more into an ECU which is currently doing nothing of any positive value.

Didn't knew they had a buzzer! Never have heard it nor anything about it. Another great reason for the Chatroom.

My 1-6 was coming on at start-up as well and would then go on and off intermittantly. I switched the connectors on the 2 ECU's (1-6 became 7-12 and vice versa) and then the problem moved to 7-12 telling me that it is in fact a faulty ECU. I just disconnected them both and forgot about them. They are located above the right rear wheel well behind a sheet metal access panel about 8-9" wide w/ 2 10 mm bolts holding it in place. There will be a wire loom holder coming out of the middle of this piece of sheet metal and it directly faces the right side of the engine. I figured I'd buy a new ECU when they are available from Ferrari UK for 1/2 the price.

I was wondering how to do a home test on this to make certain it is the ECU and that I wasn't just about to burn a wonderful example of the breed to the ground. I'm going to go try that now. I think I can get a cheaper ECU from Dan at Ricambi, and if so, this may be the fix, but I'm going to go try the self test now. I'm actually thinking about selling this car. This is my second ECU since I bought it in January (dealer paid for the first one) plus the complete engine out and water pump, plus I put in a new battery. Plus it isn't a convertible. I may not be the right owner.

In the meantime, I like having it perfect, so I'll probably buy the ECU and put it in. But until then, the buzzer has to go!!

I'm assuming you guys are talking about the "Slow Down" lights not CELs. If it 's the slow down lights, the ECUs that control them are notorious for malfunctioning. They are there to warn the driver that a cat is overheating, which is usually not the case, but you should be careful, are the CEL lights coming on also? If the cat is trully overheating the sensor should be shutting down the injectors in the offening cyc. bank too or I should clarify that it's supposed to do that that part malfunctions also.
Hey Hubbster you should just remove your bulbs from the dash if you don't have cats on the car, also assuming the exhaust ECUs have been removed so there realy is no need to be lookin' at those goofy lights. Regards Vern

I have a 91 TR, and don't seem to have a buzzer. My Cat ECU,s were both bad, energizing the light randomly. I'm told when a TR starts to misfire, you won't need a light to tell you, since the car runs so poorly. I didn't want to take the chance, and called around for prices. The local dealer wanted $700 per unit. I got 2 at GT car parts in Phoenix for $680, last year. Still expensive, but at least they're easy to install. Make sure to get the correct one for your model year, as the connectors change over the years.

BTW, I didn't think the injectors shut down in case of malfunction, at least not on TR's. I thought that "feature" started with the 355's...

As far as I know all motronis on Fcars had this temp probe and ECU. They were designed to shut down the injectors of the offending bank that had a overheating cat. This was done to cool off the cat that is/was supposed to be too hot, ie; no fuel no heat. This doesn't seem to be the case tho, the temp ECU turns on the light but doesn't shut off the injectors, a malfunction of the system, or it can shut off the injectors for no reason ie; the cat isn't too hot. I even heard someone hear say thier cat WAS to hot and temp ECU didn't turn on the light or shut down the injectors causing a fire. This last statment could be hearsay but it wouldn't surprise me with rep. this system has for not working properly. Great idea just poorly executed. Regards, Vern
