Mine did too; '79 GTB. The sender is a pulse generator and I figure the brushes wear out. At first they make contact some times then they quit all together.
Same thing happened to me. I was lucky cleaning was all it needed. Be sure that you clean the leeds (can't spell). I removed the spade male and female from the nylon cases and cleanded with contact cleaner b4 reasembleing. I then wrapped the connectors with black plastic electrical tape to protect the connection from road cr@p. Also be sure to run the leed thru the guide (mine was wire tied to the guide not thru the guide). Lucky as part in the parts manual for the 81 was not the correct part. and correct part was more twice the price of the part listed in the book. stephen
While cleaning up the engine I noticed that the wires on my sender were bent over at a harsh angle right where they exited the potting on top of the sender. One wire was almost half broken off. This is probably from as much from mechanics crushing it tying to reach into tight spaces as anything else, but just left that way I assumed it would eventually break. Because it is potted there aren't a lot of nice options for making this right. As a preventitive measure I did a little repotting with epoxy. I also added a little heat shrink tubing to help distribute the stress along more of the wire. And then I used a little too much epoxy. But until then it was going well! About half as much would have been fine. I should have used a clear tape as my mold and not masking tape that I couldn't see through. At least it can't really be seen on the car by anyone but me. I also upgraded from brittle yellow to tape to brand new orange tape because that is what I had. Image Unavailable, Please Login
