My 1983 Mondial QV has been really great to drive but recently I noticed that on occasion, first gear is not available. I put the shifter into the first gate, release the clutch and nothing happens. Then, after a while it works again.

My mechanic is not sure of the cause and I have compensated by using 2nd gear to start from a dead stop when first gear is absent.

Where is my first gear going?

I had a similar issue occasionally when instead of reverse, 2nd got selected. Otherwise, smooth shifting 99% of the time - only once a while, it seemed like there was a mechanical blockage to shifting that could be overcome by wiggling the shift lever just a little.

Then one day, while going from 3rd to 4th - nothing there, neither in 5th.
Empty gearbox... and on the left side, no reverse/1st.

What happened is the torsion action on the gear linkage (left/right movement of the stick) was out of range of the 3 levers in the gearbox actuating the selector forks.
Probable cause? Wear on the gearshift mechanism on the stick side; the 2 bushings on the centre tunnel linkage are almost new so not at fault.
The gearbox oil pan needed to be dropped to access the shift mechanism below the gearbox.
This allowed re-adjusting the linkage angles so that the torsion action on the shifter reaches all 3 levels.

I would suggest you get it adjusted before you get stranded :)

    Was the repair costly?

Not to "butt in" - had the same thing on my 328 - quick and easy fix by
my mechanic - under $200 - I think it was around $120 or so, if that.
Just a re-setup of the shifter linkages is all it is.

DEFINITELY agree with afterburner - get it fixed before it goes REALLY
wonky and leaves you stranded. Mine was so messed up I had to have
    a tow to the shop.
