Good day friends I bought a F430 two months ago and love it. One of the first things I did was to have the manifolds taken out and fixed, as I heard the dreaded ticking sound when I inspected the car. I did get a substantial amount off the car for the headers, so I was aware of the problem and prepared to deal with it. The reason for my message, on two occasions I have heard an intermittent rattling sound in the engine that is linked to revs. Initially I thought it was the aircon but it is not, as switching the aircon on and off did not have any effect. I then went into research mode and came apon Aldous voice's article on the 360 and the valves in the intake manifold making the noise. https://aldousvoice.com/2013/01/07/ferrari-360-air-intake-system/ My initial concern after testing the aircon were big ends and then valve lifters but in the back of my mind it did not make sense as it is intermittent and it seems that it is prevailant when the engine is extra warm after gunning the car. Has anyone perhaps had experience on the 430 in this regard, as for me it sounds very much similar to the issue on the 360 as identified by Aldous? Looking forward to input.
That isdue is 360 specific so its not the inlet. My last car had a rattle/buzz from the exhaust valves until I sorted it, so that's worth a check, but aside from that it's very hard to diagnose over the internet.
See if there is any excess slack in the valve shaft, you could fit an extra external light tension spring to stop it rattling about Also have a look at the brackets holding the exhaust to the gearbox housing as they tend to crack, hence thereason people remove them and fit the capisto expansion brackets
No problem. The pivot where the actuator joins to the valve was loose so I took up the slack by winding out the rod to add more preload. The symptoms were a rattle or a buzz depending on RPM.
The strange thing is that the knocking is intermittend and sounds like a krrrr sound, linked to revs. It sometimes show but mostly it is gone, as in not a sound. If it was an exhaust valve issue, surely it should be there permanently?
Get rid of the gearbox brackets and fit the Capristo expansion system, there is about 3/4 inch expansion which the gb brackets cannot cope with and break
