I have an itermittent no run problem on my 328 if I let it sit unused for a length of time. The engine immediately starts but will not take gas when I jab the accelerator to get the alternator light to go off. Pushing the accelerator down has no effect on engine speed; if anything, the engine wants to stall when this is attempted.

Engine did it this morning when I started it. Car had been sitting in the basement for about a week. I turned the key and engine immediately started but would not take gas. I shut it off and restarted and, bingo, it ran properly. I am suspicious that this is an electrical problem of some sort. Could a relay be sticking, and if so, which one.

I attempted searches on this site but am clueless as to what search words or phrases to use. I think this particular problem has been discussed here before. Any advice (other than using car more frequently) is welcome.

Lawrence, I'm not sure about your car but my past experience is similar from my VW. What happen is the plate inside the fuel distributor wasn't moving when pressing on the gas pedal, but only the butterfly from the throtle body is moving, therefore it's not getting enough air but it idles fine.

Check the plate in the fuel distributor and see if it's contaminated between the plate and the wall, remember there isn't alot of clearance between the two. Spray some carb cleaner then see if it moves freely.

That is a good possibility Mike. Also Lawrence, this is a good primer on mechanical fuel injection. Note that this does not have (or explain) the lamba/02 sensor feedback loop that yours would have. But all the other relevant info is there.

Thanks Miketuason and F355spider. Your suggestion makes really good sense. As I think back, I once had a Mercedes with CIS, a 1980. System was the same as my 328. It had crud built up on the fuel distributor inlet causing the idle speed to wander. Cleaning the intake around the moving air sensor fixed it. I'll check out the 328 today. It that plate does not move downward, it won't do anything other than idle. Thanks a lot.
