I purchased a 2010 (jan) LHD California in May this year and whilst its still under warranty i'm having a hard time diagnosing an intermittent problem- mainly as it doesn't show up when Im with the mechanic......

The symptoms are a strange grinding/whirring/hum kind of noise (hard to describe?) and I feel vibrations under the drivers foot rest (left had side). The problem has only occurred (for me) when slowing down, through the gears in auto- not necessarily using the brake, and I have heard it once whilst in reverse. It sometimes sounds for up to 10-15 seconds but is normally shorter 2-5 seconds.....it seems to show when the car is cold and hot ???

I am keen to get it sorted as the warranty runs out in January....

    Any thoughts??

    Many thanks

    JC

So you took it to a Ferrari dealer, they drove it and could not reproduce the symptoms?

    Correct.

As I said its very intermittent, and frustrating. I read in another thread that "gadgetman also experianced a strange noise, which was related to the brake lines???"

Any helpful input would be appreciated.

    Thanks

I had a similar problem last week, such noise appeared suddenly sometimes while braking or driving at a very low speed. Brought the california to my Ferrari dealer, who told me that they are changing some hydraulic piping on some of the Californias because of similar issues.

Since then, mine is working very well !

So i recommend you to bring your car to your ferrari dealer, should be covered out of warranty anyway.

I had the same problem early on. Dealer put in new s/w and separated clutch hydraulic lines. They were vibrating against the footwell due to high pressure changes. Sound went away.

It's a well known and common problem. A knowledgeable dealer should be able to research the right corrective action. In my case (an early 2010 model built in 2009 ) it involved further fixes including software updates and header replacement...whether all of this was related to the noise I don't know, but the noise hasn't come back since the fixes in March of this year.

Same issue on my 2010. Dealer could not determine the cause or reproduce last year. It is in for its annual right now, and they are changing the headers, etc and doing some other things. Honestly, I've only heard it once in the last 12 months, but it used to do it with some regularity.

Its reassuring its not an isolated case (unfortunate for others though :) )

Jcavalie - I would appreciate a copy of the service record to see what they have actually done - once you get it back- if you wouldnt mind??

Thanks for the help and useful input

I have not noticed this problem on mine yet. Did it only affect the 2009-2010 models or is this common for 2011s too?

I'll dig up the service record from last year. I didn't even ask again this year - I'd forgotten about it since it has only occurred once since last year. Stuff they are doing now: oil change, brake fluid flush, top adjustment, s/w for magnaride, manifolds (mine is in the campaign), sealing exhaust again (black soot dripping on garage floor).

Last year - I think I described it as a "vibration" or "cavitation" under the dead pedal, typically when car was warm at low speed and decelerating. It really did it quite obnoxiously prior to Sept 2010 (last annual) and when it started doing it, it would continue to do it until car cooled off. I never got it to do it for the dealer though. Since then, it did it once, and very lightly/briefly. And I couldn't reproduce it again that day.

What you are describing are the same exact symptoms I had with my 2009 model. It's caused by reasonance in the hydraulic pump that operates the clutch and only occurs in auto mode and whilst downshifting. It sounds like a horrible grinding noise which makes you think it's mechanical. There is a software fix for it that cures it completely.

If yoy do a search you'll find posts on this issue last year.

Thanks for the input - I did search but with not much result??

On a positive note my dealer seems to have a plan. He is contacting Ferrari to request a vehicle specific software pack/update.

Thanks for the history on the issue - It has helped to give my dealer some insight into the issue, as I said it was difficult to to get something diagnosed without him hearing it!!

Hopefully I'll get to the bottom of this!

    Great forum and many thanks

Mine had the loud buzzing noise when it was cold. Reprogramming the hydraulic pressure under cold conditions fixed it.

I think your best bet is what others have mentioned in this post. I just checked my service records from the visit where I mentioned this "vibration" sound and they couldn't duplicate it. I will say, that was a year ago, and they did the annual and the s/w update back then, and it has only done this once since, and much more quietly. So...maybe they inadvertently fixed it with the normal annual service and recommended s/w update.

My garage has been in contact with the factory. They say it's a software issue! Very easy fixed!

Thanks for the info about the headers and software flash

My car has a lack of power and very black exhaust tips and bumper

Can anyone help with a copy of the exact campaign number or the vin number range of affected cars

The VIN on my car is 16705X

    I think its about a Feb/March 2909 build

Is it a part of the exhaust campaign range?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I have posted similar questions in other threads but no one helped so far

    It's a UK delivered car with a 09 plate

My suggestion would be to call your nearest dealer directly, they would have the answer and would be delighted to make money servicing your car.
