I was browsing the 599/612 forum and ran across this post. Although I'm nowhere near being in the market for an F-car (student in college) right now, it did really make me start wondering whether significant savings could be made importing a car from Dubai.

Fundamentally, I could see how it would make sense. If the cars there are significantly cheaper as a whole, and the cost of importation is low enough (between taxes and/or conversion), and the cars are in comparable condition, it would be an awesome way to get a deal. I've never been there though--would winds blow dirt/sand up whenever you drove out of the city? Are the cars more abused with the abundance of wealth? If a lot of the cars are American-spec, would you pay anything other than customs taxes and shipping fees to bring them over?

I'd like to think this is a good deal, but if it is it's hard for me to figure out why I haven't heard of anyone doing this already. So...feasible way to get a car of comparable condition to one in the US for less?

Sorry for being blithely ignorant of how money works in the real world. I'm somewhat sheltered.
