So this is my first post on this website, but I spend quite a while reading various threads. A little about me, I am a university student currently studying to attain my undergrad in economics. I'd love to try and go into a one-year MBA program after words. Although the competition is extremely tight, I think my marks and experience are strong enough to get me in. I work full time (my year ended a few weeks back) and part time during semesters and have actually managed to save a good portion of my money, asides from buying a YZF-R1 for the summer.

My question is who here has experience with internet based sites? Even in a recession, internet business still thrives and I have a few innovative ideas kicking around in the old brain of mine. I have great computer skills and knowledge that would aid me and what is better than running a business from your own home? Im looking at rough costs, I know with the huge increase in interned based business that web deisigners are charging a fair bit of money, and a domain and/or my own server would be costly aswell. Also there is the cost of marketing, ex) having google bump your site up to the first few pages of a related search, and so forth. But asides from the cost, how difficult is it? I have confidance in my knowledge and ideas that I could potentially do quite well, but I'd like to hear some first hand experience. And to give a little insight without throwing my idea out there, it would be based similar to something like an online bargain finder, expect not connecting buyers to products. More like connecting individuals to other individuals. Its a hard concept to explain without giving it away completely and I have spent a good amount of time over the last few days looking into it to see if other sites like it exist. And the way I explained it before makes it sound somewhat like a prostitution ring, haha so just some first hand experience would be nice.

    Cheers.

You'd probably get more traction if you subscribed and posted this in the business section.

    If not, enjoy the cards.

Actually I was just asking if anyone had an experience. So I will leave the card in your hands and stick around because yes I love Ferraris and because in no way whatsoever am I trying to sell anything.

If he really has 'spend quite a while reading carious threads' (nice English!), he would have posted that in the B&I section!

    *Agreed

    *Card well played

I've been registered for over a year now. Anyways I was looking for help from people willing to provide advice. Not looking to get stomped for not paying 15 bucks and posting in the business and investments section. I just figured I'd give it a shot and see if anyone out there was kind enough to take a few minutes and give me a hand.

No point in getting your panties into a wad.

What I told you is good advice. People tend to be more willing to reply to business related threads in the BUSINESS forum.

    To Korr you listen.

Even though not subscribed, I am pretty sure he was at one point and either way he knows what he is talking about.

Seems quite a bit like a form letter...stuff like this pops up every few months.

"Hello, dear sirs, I am a graduate of (or about to graduate from) X University with a degree in X. I have excellent marks, blah blah blah..."

Yeah, after I read it over again, does seem like a form letter, not quite my intentions but whatever. I shouldn't have to prove I am a univeristy student in order to get reasonable responses, I could have easily said I am a farmer from Louisiana or a surgeon from Kentucky. Just wanted to try and introduce myself to the forms, give a little background. And I'm not about to graduate, I still have another semester and I don't plan on finishing there.

Well you don't have that great computer skills... You haven't even bothered to GOOGLE the basics before asking your question. :p

Domains are $10~ a year it varies between companies and what type of domain, like .com/.net/.org are cheaper than .tv/.watever etc. You can reserve them for 10years in advanced. Your idea might be great in theory but without a great URL to go with it you might struggle, if there is a name you have in mind, reserve it now.

Web hosting is very cheap as well(well this depends on which country) but in the USA you can get 10000GB/mth for around $10/mth. Having your own private server/s does cost a lot more, but for a start up company you wouldn't need to worry about that
If you plan to be as big as say ebay, then start writing those million dollar checks now...

Web Designers are a dime a dozen. Also there are so many tools and scripts that are free(legally) on the net if you have some programming knowledge you could get by for the 1st year.

Marketing is free. The best way to get your links up in google besides making your site SEO etc is to spam your site. Google ranks your site the more people are linking to it from other sites. Of course spamming is frowned upon these days so you have to put the hard yards in and visit hundreds of boards/blogs/tweeter/facebook/wiki/watever and just post your url in a way that doesn't annoy others, some sites let you have sigs, in blogs you can leave your details every time you reply to something. Even self promote your site at places like digg or if you find a site that recently did a review about online selling sites you can submit your site to be reviewed. Just get all your friends/family to do the same.

You will actually need to submit your site to google, yahoo and other search engines. Google also has free tools to webmasters to help you. There are guides out there. Just google "improving your page rank".
Even Google.com has its own guide @ www.google.com/webmasters/

It is difficult to be successful as an online only company. Twitter for example has been around since 2006 and only this past 12mths has really made the headlines but they have yet to turn a profit. Youtube always ran at a loss b4 they were bought out by google.
Maybe you're not thinking that big at the moment, but the net is global, you will eventually need to think of international sites, different languages, the more people that can use the site the more chance it has at succeeding.

All the biggest online only companies all come from programming backgrounds. If your idea is as great as you think it is, its best to team up with a programmer or become a programmer.

Finally sell the YZF-R1*, you need to be spending your summertime in a basement not having fun, if you really want to make your mark ;)

Ok maybe you don't need to sell it, but if you are really serious then you will have to spend alot of your free time trying to make the site grow in the early days to reap the rewards later on.

    Good Luck!

Thank you for that response. I know domains are relatively cheap, but I also know there are tons of scams out there. And promotion wise, I want to do it in a manner that does not give off a scam-like feel to the site. Tons of sites annoy the hell out of me through the use of spam and initially give a bad vibe. And for those who were asking to guess my univeristy, knock yourselves out. Outside of the US.

For future reference, the highlighted word is spelled; University, not "univeristy"...

    Example; University of Alberta
