I thought I would throw this out to see what some of you would think.

I've always seen the following road signs, but always wondered how severe the law interprets their validity.

    SPEED ENFORCED BY RADAR

    as opposed to

    SPEED CHECKED BY RADAR

I would prefer the checked road over the enforced road. "I was doing 57.4 MPH? hey thanks for the info officer, those radar units are precise!" Heh, checking something is one aspect, enforcing is another. I can see 'checking' to see if the speed is over the posted limit, thereby enforcing the posted limit. But why the double sign? It this just 'posted symantics' ? Any thoughts?

The first may mean, We will ram our cars into yours repeatedly and shoot you, then give you a ticket for being a blockhead.
The second may mean We are really quite lazy and may or may not mail you a ticket on the way to the photoshop to develop the pictures of underage drinkers we will pass on to the "enforcement" police who will proceed to Slam their faces in the ground and stick them with the broken remains of the bottles.
I'm really not sure but it sounds spot on.

Neil, you are correct in saying that it sounds spot on. In reality when they have speed checked by radar here in CA, they do mean it. Was driving with a buddy about 7 months ago from Los Angeles to Seattle. Usually I do this trip alone, once a month. However, he wanted to come along and he wanted to drive. Was doing about 86mph along with 6-7 other cars, and passed one of these "speed checked by radar" signs. Told him to slow down, but he said they never do anything. About 12 minutes later airplane flew over, I knew right away what it was. By this time it was too late. CHP was sitting in the median, and rounded up all 8 cars, and gave everybody a ticket. They used the radar from the plane to pace the pack and called ahead to the CHP, and all of us got tickets (well my friend, not me). That taught him a lesson. This is very common in CA, especially on the I-5.

    Be careful out there.

If I were you, I would have told that cop where to go! How dare they trick you into speeding, with usually false signs!
