After reading through countless threads and spending many hours here I thought I'd finally share my own Ferrari ownership experience. So back in June 2015 I was fortunate enough to be in a position to purchase a 430 Scuderia after a 3 year stint with a 360 modena (my first Ferrari). My 360 experience had been a good one, having had no major issues. I purchased it at 66000 km's (thats over 40,000 miles) and sold it 3 years later with 82000 km's (50000 miles). This gave me confidence to go to the next step with the scud. I picked the Scud up with 15000 km's and now have 18000 kms on her and have loved every minute. As has been mentioned a thousand times, the experience is very visceral, and the gear changes are like nothing else. I drove a 458 when I was searching for the scud, and there is no doubt in my view the 458 is clearly an entirely new generation of vehicle, but there is something very special about the scud. The market knows it too, with plenty of 458's advertised for sale. I think many Scuds (like mine) never actually hit the market but are rather sold 'behind the scenes' due to the demand for them. Anyway, she will soon be on a boat to Italy for a 4 week adventure in May with 11 other Ferraris - a major bucket list item for me... So that was all well and good until I had another itch to scratch. 360 Challenges seem to trade pretty cheaply over here in Oz - anything from $45000 US up. I think many people are afraid of the maintenance costs with these older race cars. Others tend to opt for the Porsche 996/7 cup cars. For me it just had to be a Ferrari, so I picked up a nice clean example with full Ohlins setup in December. I had my first track outing a few weeks ago in it and all I can say is wow! I've had the scud on the track before, but this just blew me away. The whole experience with a purpose built race car is so much more intense. From all the preparation required to the adrenalin of much higher cornering speeds it really puts into perspective the difference between a road racer (the scud) and a full on track car, even if it is 100 hp and a few years behind. Pound for pound, nothing trumps that experience for me. Unfortunately my day ended early with an off but will be back on the track soon. Hey, it's all part of the experience Where I was lapping 1:53 at Phillip island in the 430, I managed a 1:43 in the 360, and believe me 10 seconds a lap is definitely noticeable... Anyway, enough ranting. Here are some pics. Congrats on your cars. They are both gorgeous. The challenge car still looks modern after all these years. Enjoy
I appreciate this sort of chat ... Especially whenever it strokes the ego of a 360 fanatic. 360 is the next 275GTB
Thanks for the kind words guys! It certainly feels like some sort of addiction. Just can't get enough of playing with these things!
Hey Moc is that ex Scott's/Alvin's Scud? They are addictive here are my two. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
That's a great pair Steve. Silver suits the 360 perfectly. My two have never met.. The race car lives down with my folks at Phillip Island, the Scud at home in Melbourne. I'm the 3rd owner of the scud. Was delivered new to Sydney, then brought down to Melb by the second owner - not sure exactly who the Melb owner was.
Great cars mate. Shipping your car to Italy for a road trip. What an adventure! Who are you hooking up with over there?
Hi Max, Every couple of years a group from the Ferrari club of Victoria organise a European road trip with their cars. This year there are 12 cars going over, but this will be my first time. Starting in Rome we head to Florence, Modena for a factory tour, Venice, Lake Como, Milan, Portofino, Monte Carlo and finish up in Genoa. I'm going to stay on an extra week and do Cannes and St Tropez. I fear the traffic will be a nightmare along the Riviera during the holiday season though... Cheers
Thanks mate, silver is my fav colour, well that and carbon. The road trip sounds like great fun. I think the prices of 360C are going up in value you got a good deal with yours it looks very clean.
Interesting- I also have a 360 ch and a 430 Scud. When I compared lap times the Scud- stock (+430 challenge slick) vs the 360, Scud beat the 360 pretty good. On a longer course VIR- 360 was 2:11, scud was 2:02, shorter course was much closer as the Scud didn't have the suspension to take advantage of the grip from the slicks. Too much weight transfer. I was running both car with all traction control off.
Thats a big difference the other way. Maybe I wasnt pushing as hard in the Scud as I thought.. Mind you my experience from my previous car (an Evo X) was around 3 seconds a lap standard road tyres vs semi slicks at the same circuit.
Well, I still have to compliment your excellent choice of cars! You are obviously the second most interesting man in world. I have removed a bunch of weight from the challenge car and also run the +1 perelli slicks which turned her from fun to very very fun. 2590# with fluids & fuel, no driver. +1 on the raw experience that car provides, I can't help smiling when I drive her. She can keep up with many cars that have significantly more HP. Just a magnificent handling machine. My project this season is to fit a Penske racing coil-over kit and reduce the front brake size to the same as the CH car in order to fit wider 18" wheels and rubber. Have decided to use the Scud only for the track this year. That's f1 super fast 2 is imho the perfect transmission for the track. Good luck and congrats on the awesome cars!
Haha thanks! What did you remove out of the Challenge to reduce the weight? I wouldn't of thought there was much left to take? There's nothing at all like the gearchange in the Scud! Here's a lap in it at Phillip Island. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqWKVmhQRSE Yet to get any footage of the 360 but will soon...
Nice driving! I only have data from the CH car. Here's a lap w data @ New Jersey Motorsports in the 360Ch, I had a pro coach helping me. Great way to improve, good pro's who like to teach. https://youtu.be/iNvvm7Mxa8w You really have to work to get weight out, I took everything out of the CH car, including 30# of wiring harness, ventilation, dash, door trims, engine covers, interior covers, if it didn't make the car faster it went in a box...labeled box.
Looks awesome. Just watching that makes me want to get out there ASAP. I might look at trimming some weight off the car down the track. As far as I'm aware one of our Aussie V8 supercar drivers squeezed a 1:37 out of a 360 Challenge at Phillip Island, so until I'm anywhere near that I probably dont need to touch the car... Just improve the driver
