I hear you. I bought a baby 1st gen 16GB wifi only for $275 from a buddy of mine. It is a very neat toy and I rarely open my Thinkpad now! For the record there are 3 laptops and one tower here in addition to the iPad. Spent roughly $50 on apps in the week I've owned it.
Dj-ing stuff - Can't help there [Although, IIRC, there was a little review of a virtual desk in Macworld a while back - I'll see if I can find it] For reading; - Obviously, iBooks - For a (much) wider selection, Amazon's kindle app (free, and you buy books via a browser) - Public domain books - Check out Project Gutenberg - Books from there will load into either of the above. - If you're into comics; "Comics by comixology". - The web; "Instapaper" - lets you save online articles for later reading. - RSS feed; "Reeder" - #1 recommendation at Macworld. - I've just activated R&T's and SI's own apps for reading their mags - Free if you're a print subscriber. Many mags are doing the same - Some allow you to buy individual issues, some don't. - Zinio - many magazines available via this app too. Cheers, Ian
Im doing a whole series on iPad 2 App reviews...check out and subscribe to my channel as a lot of new videos are being posted within the next 2 weeks. http://www.youtube.com/user/FuriousTechnology
Thanks so much Ian. Really appreciate the effort. Weird question, but anything else, other than dj-ing that you would suggest? This whole iPad thing is really new to me, as i only have iPod Classic, Shuffle, and Nano. And the iMac. The closest thing to the iPad would be the iPhone, something i don't own and barely have experience using that.
What kind of case do you guys use for your iPad 2? I just got this Targus one and I love it! [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_udQ3teyJGY&feature=channel_video_title[/ame]
I got the Apple "Smart Cover"; http://www.macworld.com/article/158447/2011/03/ipad_2_smart_cover.html It works very well - Protects the screen, pauses when you close it etc. A simple, elegant solution. Cheers, Ian
You're welcome! As for other apps, it again comes back to what do you want to do with it?.... I think you're approaching it "the wrong way" - Seems like you want to folk to recommend "cool" apps that may or may not be useful to you. A good start point (IMO) is when you've got some time login to the app store and start searching - "Most popular" in whatever category catches your eye is generally a good start. Chances are that someone, somewhere, has done an app "just for you" - Finding it may take a while, but it'll be out there! Cheers, Ian
"Not so far" is all I can say on that..... It's a pretty darn solid piece of kit, and if the back gets scratched I'll call it "patina". I looked at a bunch of cases in the store, and while they'll certainly give better protection the downside is making it bigger. One thing I did mean to check out are the "custom wraps" - Same kind of stuff as used to wrap cars, laser cut and "professionally" applied. Cheers, Ian
Yeap I agree. I actually intended to get the iPad when i'm taking on my Masters. My mom got one as a gift about 2 weeks ago, hence the sudden shock. However, this past few days, it's really making my life easier. I just need to get used to it before actually deciding how to make the best out of it. Again, thanks for the advice.
Pluses and minuses either way. The Encase not only protects the back but has ridges that make it easier to carry, hold and use standing.
I just picked up a HP touchpad... not really sure if it aids me much or not. I definitely prefer WebOS to iOS though.
Like everything, takes a little learning..... But at least you don't have to break out the manual. Anyway, one app that will really improve the quality of your life is Dropbox - Install it on the iPad (and your iPhone, PC's, Mac's and Linux boxes!) and then simply drop stuff into it. Said stuff is then almost instantly copied to the cloud (nice backup!) and all your other devices! [Selective sync is also possible of course.] Once you've used it you'll wonder what to do with all the USB sticks etc you have laying around...... Cheers, Ian
I'm replacing my apple case with this: http://www.restorationhardware.com/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=prod190071&categoryId=search I used my iPad for work in Europe recently and it was awesome. I paid $7 for a micro-sim that gave me Internet, email, skype, remote desktop etc. And I only used 10% of it. iPad's rock!
