So I'm ready for a new phone my VX6700 is dog slow even after doing a fresh reset plus it looks dated. I thinking of getting the Iphone for ATT a few questions.

    1. How is the ms exchange support on the phone?
    2. How is ATT reception? I love Verizon but every phone they have is dated (i hate blackberry's just could never get used to them)

I have good reception on AT&T, but not if I go out into the country, and some pockets in rural areas without good GSM reception.

Currently, I do not believe that MS Exchange is natively supported by the iPhone. You can, I believe, access Exchange mail via IMAP. I suspect that with iPhone 2.0 in June, MS Exchange and push e-mail will have native support. Perhaps it would be prudent to wait a few weeks and see if that is true.

No native Exchange support until the next version, when ActiveSync will be available. You can access via IMAP but calendar doesn't work so well if you use that.

This is my main gripe with the iPhone. I hate having to sync up my phone to my computer to download my calendar. On my Blackberry, everything sync OTA via Exchange. I would give my first born to have OTA calendar syncing.

BES server that provides that functionality is the thing that is keeping Blackberry in the game...for now. Once iPhone has Active Sync it will take a huge chunk out of Blackberry's market.

A gen 2 version is due out soon. I'm waiting for it myself.
ATT signal is good in the Boston area.

Great, until you want your calendar and contacts. A better statement would be that Exchange supports the IMAP protocol, like many other mail systems. Most corporate mail admins won't open IMAP out to the Internet because it is a potential attack vector.

ActiveSync support will also give the ability to lookup against a corporate address list. iPhone 2 will also support Cisco VPN and allow admins to set security policies, important for the corporate market.

I agree version 2 will be much better but Exchange calendars can be supported via local synch. If your IT staff cannot provide secure access to their Exchange servers via IMAP to iPhones you may need to questions the tools they have-- it can be done (we use Juniper products that work).

I am the IT staff, currently managing 26,000 Exchange mailboxes. :) I know you can do secure IMAP using Juniper devices, but that is not "secure enough" for a company this size. We would not allow anything that cannot do remote wipe (don't want corporate data floating around out there in case of lost or stolen device), and our users insist on having OTA sync of calendar, plus access to the corporate address book, which you will get with ActiveSync (plus support for Cisco VPN). IMAP's OK for simple mail access but doesn't work for us at the enterprise level.

Did you try Google calendar? For my relatively basic needs, Google calendar and integration with Microsoft Outlook Calendar works well for me.

IMAP will not work for me since we use calender sharing. Is this new 2.0 IPHONE a new phone or just a firmware upgrade to the existing IPHONE?

Both. Apple is rolling out a 3G iPhone, as well as upgrading the software for the 3G version, as well as the original.

Hmm, I never looked into Google calendar before. My wife and I share iCal calendars, and she likes the native iPhone support. I'm hoping for some more robust options with iPhone 2.0.

    It's a software update

Apple plans to release the final iPhone 2.0 software, including the iPhone SDK and new enterprise features, as a free software update for all iPhone customers by the end of June.

Gen two will be G3. Of course not all cell companies allow all phone features to be used fully.

Or come out with something to fix it. i did have a shelled on it but had to take it off after thinking i had one to replace it didn't so now i have a nice little scratch on the left bottom side around the Itunes button.

Nope - Apple don't do it that way...... However, expectations are high that Steve will announce it at the WWDC in San Francisco next week (9th thru the 13th). How long after that it'll be before it's available is another question of course.

    Cheers,
    Ian
