Although I don't post much here on FerrariChat, I read and lurk almost every day. Over the past few years I've realized that there are tons of very intelligent and skilled people on this board. I want to know if anyone has any interest in putting together an iPhone application that would have live timing and scoring during the Formula 1 races so we could use it at home much like a KangarooTV at the track. I personally do not have the computer programming knowledge to get it going but I know the combined forces of FerrariChat could put something together and I would be happy to help in any way I could. There might even be some money in it for the programmers if it makes it's way to the iTunes App Store. This thread is just for shouting out ideas and seeing what can be done and who is interested. I'm really looking forward to seeing if we can cook something good up.

P.S. Anyone on here developing any other apps for the iPhone?

    Hi,

An interesting thought. Has anyone used the Kangaroo device at a race? [www.kangaroo.tv is their address BTW]

It certainly looks interesting, but I *suspect* their "on-site-broadcast-technology" is protected (probably encrypted). How much interest they'd have on opening it up to allow reception on "third party" devices is a big first question..... It appears they make their $ from renting the device.

Possibly, they could also make $ by allowing an iPhone user to "subscribe" - ie, a S/W only service, but that's a Q only they could answer.

    Just my thoughts,
    Cheers,
    Ian

I've never tried it, but see no reason why not (It's just a Java app after all.)

The Kangaroo thing offers much, much more though - It seems you can select which camera(s) to watch, do your own instant replays and listen to radio transmissions etc.....

As I said, I'm pretty sure it could be ported, the Q is whether they would want to do it.

    Cheers,
    Ian

I am sure the Kangaroo TV is better today than it was when I tried it at a race several years ago, but it was not great then. It was 1st Gen though... It was slightly delayed so as a car went through a turn you would see it just a tick behind...it was a bit strange. All the T&S stuff was COOL though. You could even slice and dice the info in a way that suited you IIRC.

I would love to see something good for the new 3G iphone. I hope to get one of those when they pull the trigger in a few months and bump the high cap phone up to 32gigs of memory... That should be enough to cover most all the needs I will have for the phone for the two years of the contract...I am a little concerned that 16 gig would not be quite enough.

    YMMV,

I have used the internet feature on my iPhone for live timing at LMS races (at Barcelona, Monza), LeMans and vaious ALMS races we've attended and when F1 races conflicted with these, I just had another page for F1 live timing. My only complaint is battery life on the iPhone.

I was looking for an F1 iPhone app as well and all I found was F1 info which was just an rss feed. Decided to ket you guys know that I have just finished deveoping an F1 app and it should hopefully be on the store within the next fortnight (waiting on Apple). If you go to my blog at hotrodsoftware.wordpress.com I am working on a post about the app. I would love to get some initial feedback and I could try and add anything you want before it ships.

I just came across this thread and thought I'd let you know.

    Thanks

    Hello all,

Sorry if this seems like spam, but you asked for it, and we made it ! The Ultimate Guide to F1 on your iPhone.

We have been creating our F1 app for a few months now, and it's not just another news/rss feed app. It contains very detailed information about each driver, each team, and each race as well as pictures and videos - too much to list, so we made a YouTube video showing all the features: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fj-lQo1odXQ

Our app "F1 2009" by Gourmet Pixel is currently the 2nd most popular sports app on the UK AppStore! All the reviews apart from 1 are 5 out of 5 stars.

    iTunes link: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=306056223&mt=8

We hope you like it. There will be a free trial coming out soon. Feel free to ask questions or make suggestions.
    Regards,

    Ben

    Ben,

Nice looking app! I have a question about it that I did not see addressed in the write up.

I have a first gen iPhone and I have it unlocked so that I don't have to buy an iPhone specific plan... What that means is that I don't have a data plan for Edge connection...it WILL connect though and from time to time I think I have a wifi connection but don't and end up getting dinged pretty hard for "data"... Can I set the app up so that it will ONLY connect when I have a wifi connection or will I just have to be very careful not to open the app if I am outside a wifi hot spot????

I guess I should add that I use version 2.0.2 for the iPhone software and no desire to upgrade as doing so will relock the phone and there is some question as to if I would be able to unlock it after the upgrade. When the 32 gig phone comes out I will probably upgrade to that one and suck it up and pay the extra for a full iphone plan...

    Thanks,
    James

What it needs is real time Timing and Scoring. So, you can watch TV live and know what's going on without having your computer on your lap. Would be super helpful also if you're actually at the race.

What is coming soon is a Slingbox app for your Iphone. It will allow you to view your TV at home on your Iphone. Then, if you're at the race, you can see your TV of the event streaming live (or, with a few seconds delay). You can watch the race on TV and be there at the same time for example. I think the app is due out this spring. I have a slingbox and if you travel alot, you can't see how you used to live without it.

An official app was made made available on iTunes last weekend. The three reviews so far seem very positive.
