Ok.. I got an ipod for my b-day. I turned it on and quicky found the games etc..everything was working fine. I decide to install the software that comes with it, and all goes well with that. I plug the USB cable into the computer, and then in the ipod. Nothing happends..no pop-up on the computer indicating that it recognizes the unit. I then try a different port. I get a pop up that says it does not recognize the device. So I plug my camera into the same port and everything works ok. I plug the ipod back into the first prot I tried, and try to turn it on..nothing happends. My ipod won't even turn on now! I read the trouble shooting section of the manual, and did everything they said to do..still no dice. Did i wreak this thing? What am I doing wrong??
I haven't read the manual so it might have mentioned this, but first make sure it's not on "hold" - there's a little switch at the top of the iPod, if it's orange, flip it off. When it's on "hold" it won't react if you press any buttons, including trying to turn it on. Try that and if that's not the problem I might have some other ideas. If it doesn't work, your iPod could be messed up or your battery could just be out.
I checked the hold switch and its off They say to switch it on and then back off again, and then to press the menu button and the center button at the sametime for 6 seconds. i did that and nothing. The battery could be dead, but I was playing solitare just before I plugged into the computer, and it was working fine, so thats why I'm a little concerned about it.
Hmm I'm not sure. Did you try reinstalling the software? Try downloading it from the website http://www.apple.com/itunes/ Although the new version of iTunes is really buggy Also check "My Computer" to see if there is an iPod drive showing up when you plug it in. With my old camera it gave me the "Device not recognized" error and the software wouldn't open automatically but it still showed up in My Computer. Then if you open iTunes it should show up on the side. Sounds like either your cord or your iPod is messed up though. Try using a friend's cord on your iPod. That's all I got, good luck. How long ago did you get it?
Yeah, re-download the new iPod manager and new itunes, install these, and restart. Re-plug and re-try. Open the ipod mananger, it should show your ipod, restore it, and make sure everything is up to date. Or, try firewire if possible, its better than usb anyways.
I got the ipod video (5th gen.) and i have no idea how to add videos. I somehow got a video of a ferrari on it, but i have some other videos that I converted in ipod format or whatever and when I try to put it on by File -> Add file to library it does add. any ideas??
Add to library only adds to the library that is on your computer not to the iPod. Try adding them to your library, and then dragging them from "Moves" to "iPod".
The CS at Apple is the worst. They will only tell you what you can read in the manual. My daughter's Ipod has been a total headache with the amount of bugs that thing has. I find it hard to believe how popular they are with all the problems and poor answers I have gotten in my experiences. BT
Turns out my I-pod was a bad unit. I took it back to Future shop and they gave me another unit. Unfortunatly I haven't had the chance to try it out yet. Funny thing is.. when I turn this on it says "connect to your computer. Use Itunes to restore", and then shuts off with in 10 seconds. Weird. If this one doesn't work, I'm just gonna have the giver return it for a full refund. I have never had any luck with these electronic devices. ;(
Well obviously you will try connecting it and see what happens but if it still does that try resetting it (turn the hold switch on and then off again, and then hold the center button and the menu button at the same time for about 6 seconds, then it will turn off and turn back on) good luck
The only issue I'm having is on startup, my Nano goes into replay mode. I've tried to update the software & reinstate the default settings but that doesn't correct the issue. Other than that it works fine.
Newest iPods don't support Firewire.. 2 iPods here, my wife's only issue with hers was the battery lasted about a year. I replaced it with an aftermarket battery from Fry's and it's been fine ever since. My 60G Video Ipod has recently started acting up when I plug it in to my laptop, with iTunes not recognizing it. I reboot the laptop, check the lock on the 'pod, and everything seems to work ok after that.. The issues with mine reared their head with the latest version of iTunes.. Todd
Ok..this is getting really frustrating. As I said, I return the first Ipod to the store where it was bought. They give me a new one after trying to get it to work. I finaly have the time to set it up, but first I try to charge it up with the new charger I bought. The screen turns on (but with no light) to show that its charging..wonderful. I let it sit for about an hour or so. I unplug the charger, and turn the thing on for the first time. Up comes a screen that says :"use itunes to sync your ipod" Then shuts off. Ok, so I remove all the old softwear, and itunes altogether. I reload the new softwear which came with the new ipod, and download all the latest updates from the apple site. I plug the ipod into the 2.0 USB port on the computer, computer says it doesn't recognize the device AGAIN!! I remove and reload everything AGAIN...still no recognition. I plug my camera into the port, no problem. Replug the ipod..does not know what it is. But it shows its charging??? Now I unplug and turn it on..NOTHING! The damn thing won't turn on anymore for the second time!! Same as the first one!! No matter what I do I cannot get it to turn on! So I plug it into the wall and leave it for almost a week..screen shows its charging, battery shows its low. I come back to it today..screen shows its charging, and the battery STILL shows low WTF??? How do I get this friggin thing to work?? Is it possiable I got 2 bad ipods? or is somthing in my computer blowing these things up.. I'm really upset about this, I really want to use thing thing! And to top it all off I recived it as a gift from my parents!! I would hate to have them take it back for a full refund. Thanks for all the help so far
I've scanned the thread: 1. Are you using a Mac or XP computer? 2. This unit might be bad also 3. I do not like Itunes for windows. I use this product: http://www.mediafour.com/products/xplay/ I've never had a problem with my Ipod. Though now it is basically perm. installed in my car with a direct connection to my stereo. I only remove it to add songs.
This is just a guess but I wonder if removing all the old software was the action that may have made the problem worse. It's possible that you may have accidentally removed an important driver/software in the process of removing all the old software. Then, when you installed the software from the CD that came with the iPod it did not install or replace the driver/software that is needed to recognize the iPod. Now, you would think that the CD would give you everything you would need - but maybe not. Couple of questions 1. If the iPod asked you to use iTunes to sync your iPod, did you do this? In other words, did you launch iTunes while the iPod was plugged into your USB port? Your posting indicates that this is the moment when you started removing all your software. 2. Try rebooting the iPod by holding down the Menu and center Select button on the click wheel for a few seconds. The new version of iTunes finally comes with an entire new area where you can do a lot more with your iPod, such as reset the iPod to its default settings, update its software, etc If you can get the iPod to reboot, I would try plugging it into you USB port, launch iTunes 7 and then see if it mounts the iPod in the left column next to the Playlists. If it does, then I would reset the settings of the iPod and let iTunes update the iPods software. You can also try searching and/or posting something on: http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=146 Good Luck!
A friend had very similar problems to the one you're describing. Turned out it was a bad unit, and he only got a replacement after much table banging and threatening legal action. I would never buy anything with an Apple logo on it. The only Apple product I use now is an iBook, and I got that free in a contest. Apple, IMHO, represents the triumph of form over function, aesthetics over reliability. Most Apple products are overrated and overpriced, with cheaper and better alternatives out there. I prefer Creative's music players, for instance. Less expensive, with more functions, and no proprietary software/DRM needed to use their devices. And more reliable, too, if the experiences of my friends and I are anything to go by.
