I bet it would have worked, and been an inspiring rescue too.

Sure, the rockets were fired out of sequence and dropped it on the runway, that is a tough system to develop and with so little time. I think if could have been sorted though and the mission pulled off.

Reminds me of the Blue Angel's Fat Albert and the 8 rocket fuel engines it has attached for short takeoff.

Somebody should've stuck a post-it note in the instrument panel.

Same here... especially since the 'Fat Albert' video was right after the one above.

Old technology... was used back in the 40's (JATO, RATO). Notably with the B-47 bomber in the late 40's, early 50's, to shorten takeoff run.

Early turbojets took a long time to develop any kind of power.

That would have eliminated the fatal pilot error that doomed the mission.

Of course, the mission would not have worked anyway, but Carter became more and more desperate.

They did go into Iran and it was a bad failure for the US and all concerned. Congress then passed a law requiring the military branches to work together i.e. joint and to develop dedicated SOF (Special Operations Units) i.e. the start of each brach re branding and creating SOF units. 160th SOAR in the Army 27th SOF in AF etc etc
