    It took him ages to mature, though, and many had given up on him.

    Hamilton was competitive from the word Go, when he stepped in F1, but Button for many years looked like a glorified playboy. PLenty of potential, but not showing motivation.

    But he did mature. With Hamilton the jury's still out. He's still getting by on raw talent IMO.

    What jury? Lewis was a great racer from the word go, a future great OMO.
    Strange thing to say about his talent. Of course he is getting by on raw talent. Talent that most of the f1 drivers wished they had, though Kobayashi also shows a little of the same.
    Jenson only has the maturity because of his long years in F1, Lewis is influenced by this, its plain to see. Thats why they complement each other.

    Button and Hamilton as well as Webber and Vettel have the very best cars out there. Button and Hamilton are not as good as many think they are. Webber and Vettel as well accept that their cars are slightly better. This is why both teams team-mates are clumped together. It is Alonso that is the better driver on the track. He is killing his team-mate and if his car was just 5% better, he wouldnt even be looking over his shoulder at the rest because he would be miles ahead.

    The Ferrari is better/faster than the McLaren (although I wouldn't say the same about the team). Ferrari just screwed up the earlier races. I believe that they finally pulled it together in the second half of the season and stopped the self-inflicted injuries. I don't agree that Alonso would be "miles ahead" of everyone though...to concede that he is a better driver than any of the four you mentioned because he's beating Massa is an argument that only you will support.

    Also, Massa has been a mess since being forced to concede the Hockenheim race to Alonso.

    Lewis was fast from day one. That's not the same as being a great racer. While he has improved (no pit entry crashes of late) he still lets the red mist take over on occasion.

    BTW Welcome back OMHP

    First of all what does OMHP mean??
    Regarding Lewis being just fast in your opinion. He was also champion of the other formula championships before he got an F1 seat. He is way more than just fast, he is courageous and daring as well as being fast. This IMO = a great racer.
    I for one would want to see 22 drivers like Hamilton and Kobayashi thrashing it out. Than any other drivers out there.

    OMHP refers to another poster. Sorry for any confusion.
    Would it suit you better if I conceded that Lewis is a great driver but not yet a complete one?

    Oh sambomydog was banned too? Makes sense now, all the Hamilton lovers got banned or quiet with his latest performances.

    Anyway, Button for me has been one of the surprises of the season. I like him, and I hope he beats Hamilton in the final standings. Then I can tell SRT Mike that Button is better than Hamilton because he beat him in equal equipment...lol

    Hello mate..;)

    Lets just say Lewis is a all out racer, fantastic to watch, sometimes it pays off and he is a hero sometimes it doesn't, and so then his bashers love to fill there boots. Why because he is the one they fear the most, and can't see it any other way..

    Button, like I said at the start before he turned a wheel at Mclaren, is there to pick up the pieces when the big guns fight it out, and he does it smartly, had Vettel not taken him out at SPA, he would be looking damn good now.

    The funny thing is, people try to paint you as a Hamilton apologist, but honestly it seems like you're more of a Button fan but love the talent of Lewis. I think Lewis is another "daredevil" in the mold of Senna and Villenueve and I have always enjoyed that type of driver. It's funny to see so many people marveling at Kobiyashi yesterday but criticizing Lewis in the same breath (probably because Kobi is no threat to win the title).

    While Ferrari and Red Bull have screwed up often to keep things close, I think Lewis always felt that McLaren couldn't win a war of attrition this season and has taken his chances whenever possible. Of course, it hasn't paid off of late. Button has sat back and let the others make their mistakes with the knowledge he was competitive enough to pick up the pieces. At the end of the day, both angles were good enough to keep them in the battle, but I think they need to be able to flat out win the remaining races to have a ghost of a chance (it's not happening). Red Bull SHOULD be champs this year, but I think Alonso has been able to recover enough (and Ferrari advanced enough) to be a serious threat down the stretch.

    I still think the Lewis hate makes no sense. The guys is always competitive, always gives it his all and aggressively pursues the win. What is so bad about that? I've always preferred the "play to win" attitude over "play not to lose". It's why my collegiate football team chaps my arse on a weekly basis.

    +1 Bang on, people complain there is no overtaking yet jump with joy when a driver they hate does, and comes worse off, yet low and behold nothing when they pull it off.

    Grapes taste sour, I suppose.

    I just can't get my head round anyone hating a driver, I admire most of them.

    SO, to restate three of your facts which fit my views :)

    1) Hamilton has one more win than Button (who coulda/woulda/shoulda won at Monza);
    2) Hamilton has only 5.2% more points than Hamilton;
    3) Hamilton has qualified a whopping 1 grid position higher than Button

    Hardly a floor-wiping ;-)
