I don´t have any useful information, just want to say this is my favourite 212 Inter Vignale.

Asked the same question myself about six weeks ago and ventured a guess as to the price: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=138700735&postcount=5

After seeing the Monterey estimates being put up by RM, I might now guess a little lower.

Wonder what the original colors might have been, or whether it was coincidentally earthmover yellow/black.

IMHO it's the best of the odd-numbered Vignale 212s, although I slightly prefer the even-numbered 340s (0222AT, 0224AT, 0226AT). It would look great amongst your wonderful collection. :)

Anyone have detailed photos to savor ?

Also noticed the Auto Union is for sale again as well. If I'm not mistaken, this was the Auto Union that was for sale and highly publicized on TV, then turned out not to be for sale because of some questionable documentation. Wonder if anything has changed since then and what?

They realized that it was not the s/n adverticed hence the history was incorrect.
The car was withdrawn in Paris and reoffered now by Bonhams at its Quail auction.
I wonder if Bonhams lowered the reserve price.
    Regards.

As the owner/restorer of 0197EL, I can only say that the question of color is difficult to confirm. When I bought the car in 1976, it was totally stripped with no trace of color on the outside. However I did find a minute speck of yellow, and painted the car accordingly. My yellow was quite a bit darker than the current color. It is also interesting to note that following its recent restoration, I understand that the body is now square, and the doors are the same length. That was not how Vignale built it! Also the original tunnel vents in the front wings are no longer there. They matched the rearlights, and were not a vent for hot air, but had a rearward facing red light in the tunnel. The lenses and bulb holders were the same as those in the rear. There are a number of modifications to the car now, and I wonder why no-one has questioned the number 2289 stamped on a chassis rail?

Very interesting comments, much appreciated by a disinterested spectator like myself albeit perhaps a bit controversial. That explains the photos I'd seen in a much deeper yellow, e.g. on the car's Barchetta page.

The Barchetta page photo also shows the 'tunnel vents', but it is interesting to see that such trim is not present in the very early photos contained in the book "Making a Difference". Moreover, the Barchetta photo shows externally mounted fog/driving lights at the front, as does a photo during the 1960s (http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=138275039&postcount=125), but the in the photos on the Bonham's website they appear to have been returned to the original recessed configuration shown in the early "Making a Difference" photos.

It's fascinating how these functional works of art change and survive and are reevaluated. Thanks again for posting.

    Hi Don

Nice to see you here on Fchat. Welcome!
The colour change is one thing, but to even and square up an original Vignale body is a total disaster. I can't fathom the mentality that would do such a thing...
What is the story behind the 2289 on the chassis rail?

    Best wishes
