    HI,

    I HAVE A 308 GTS (1978).
LAST YEAR SOME ONE TOLD ME THAT THE DISTRIBUTER CAPS ON MY CAR ARE THE SAME AS USED ON SOME ALFA ROMEO CARS.

I DID NOT BELIEVE HIM, BUT I CAM ACROSS THIS SITE AND NOW SAW THE CHANCE TO ASK SOMEBODY HERE.

IS THIS TRUE OR NOT? OR ARE THEY SIMULAR TO ANY OTHER CAPS ON OTHER BRAND CARS. OR ARE THE ONLY SPECIFICALY MADE BY FERRARI FOR THIS CAR.

(I KNOW THAT FERRARI HAS "BORROWED" CERTAIN COMPONENTS FROM SUPPLIERS, WHICH ARE USED IN OTHER BRANDS OF CARS TOO)

    THANX SO MUCH,

    PIETER

If this proved to be the case, you'd be a hero for finding it out. I can't imagine that someone's been sitting on this gem without sharing, though, since we'd all be interested in it for obvious reasons.

It may be the case. But, it is Fiat parts that usually match up to Ferrari parts rather than Alfa parts.

No foolin? Where do I get parts for one of those, and how much do they cost? That doesn't sound a whole lot cheaper than what I've got now... :|

OK, so I've done some searching and it looks like Montreals are more scarce than 308s, presumably the Montreal crowd says "We can use Ferrari 308 distributor caps! Sweet!" Am I all wet?

The Montreal uses a single Marelli S 127 C (or D) distributor with an 8 wire cap, twin coil set up similar to the 308 Euro single distributor.

Years ago I heard that an old Ford 8 cylinder cap could be modified to fit the 308 (twin dist) and just utilize 4 posts on each cap. I tried the cap off of a Ford 390 FE motor that I have and it almost fit. It would have to have about .030" removed from the inside diameter in the seat area. Then one would have to find a rotor that would accomadate the Ford's contact posts inside the cap.

For more Alfa Montreal info go to this EXCELLANT web site. I wish there was one this good for 308s.

Yes, sorry if my explaination is not clear, but Parkerfe was commenting that many parts that cross over are Fiat...I am showing that Alfa does as well.

Porsche 914 brake pads fit perfect on a 308. calipers are Porsche 914 front and 911 rear. at least on carb cars.

    HI,

IT IS GREAT TO SEE, SO MANY RESPONSES. NEVER WOULD HAVE EXPECTED THAT.
I WAS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHICH OTHER CAR USES THE SAME DISTRIBUTER CAP (I HAVE THE DUAL ONE)
THEM COSTING 400-SOME DOLLARS A PIECE, MADE ME SEACH FOR A CHEAPER ALTERNATIVE. HEY WE ALL TRIED TO CUT COST AND MAINTANANCE.

IT IS ALLWAYS MY HABBIT TO CHANGE ROTOR CAP AND SPARKPLUGS, WHEN I GET A NEW CAR. THESE PARTS ARE USUALY PRETTY CHEAP FOR THE GENERAL CAR.
BUT IN THIS CASE, I GUES I WILL WAIT TILL IT REALY BRAKES. I HAVE HAD THIS CAR NOW FOR 8 YEARS AND 17.000 MILES AND ONLY HAD TO CHANGE BRAKES AND DO OIL CHANGES. SO THIS CAR HAS BEEN VERY LOW MAINTANACE FOR ME (LUCKELY)

I DO NEED TO DO THE TIMING BELTS THOUGH, BUT THEY ONLY COST $100/PIECE AND NOT SO EXPENSIVE AS I READ IN ANOTHER FORUM TALK ON THIS SITE.

    I DO HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION:

MY CAR WAS EXPORTED TO EUROPE IN 1991, I BOUGHT IT THERE (I AM FROM HOLLAND) IN 1998 I SHIPPED IT BACK TO THE USA AND DROVE AROUND HERE ON EUROPEAN PLATES.

I DID FOUND OUT THAT THE LAST OWNER IS FROM FLORIDA (WHERE IS WAS LAST TITTLED)

DOES ANYONE KNOWS, HOW I CAN GET IN POSSESION OF A USA TITTLE AGAIN?

    THANX SO MUCH,

    PIETER

There's been some guy on E-bay selling alternator's that he lists several different makes for (Alfa-Fiat-Ferrari I think).

Many components for FIAT Group brands ( Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia ) were since 1970 used by Ferrari/Lambo`s /Maserati due to low cost and availability. It applies to ignition distributors and coils (Magneti Marelli ), alternators and starters ( Bosch ), braking systems MC ( Bendix Italia ) , carbs ( Weber ), radiator caps ( Savara ) , fuel filters ( FISPA) as well as some exterior items ( door handles, wipers, lights, fuel lines, ). The distributor cap and ignition coil is likely shared with the 1970 Alfa GTA racer 2000 cc 4 cyl engine .Check http://www.ebspares.com/racers.htm.

I believe the thought of some Fiat or Alfa distributor cap fitting is a whimsical dream....if there was a crossover, it would have been discovered years ago...most independant Ferrari service techs work on Alfas and Fiats, they would have discovered this long ago.

    Hello all,

after some posts during the beginnings of the 'old' FerrariChat Forum, I was absent for a while, but now 'rediscovered' this great forum.

But now for the subject; the cap of the 308 one distributor version is indeed the same like that one on the Alfa Montreal. Not so the caps for the dual distributor engines.

But unfortunately the Alfa dealers - at least over here in Europe - charge exactly the same amount like the Ferrari dealers.
Currently my preferred Alfa parts dealer - beside my 308 GTB I have a '72 Alfa 2000 GTV - asks around EUR 350,-- for the Montreal distributor cap.

    Best Regards from Germany

    Martin

    Pieter,

Yes you can retitle the car back in the USA. Hopefully your car has the EPA/DOT conformity sticker in the door jam. You can also contact the FL dept. of trans for your car as it was titled there last. Lastly because of the VIN# will show it was an original USA car a quick call to Dick Merritt at the USA DOT will have a conformity letter on file to allow the car to be reimported and titled anywhere you want in the USA.

    Philip
