do u all, in ur opinions, think that fernando alsonso is a worthy champion? my opinion, it's a no. the only man fit to take schumi's crown this year is kimi raikkonen, not alonso. i mean lets face it, alonso has been really really lucky in a few races, particularly imola and nurburgring, where kimi was leading and he was takes out as usual by relability problems. skill wise, i think kimi is much of a better racer, compared to fernando. kimi is as he is labelled, extremely cool under pressure, and he knows how to actually respond to pressure during races. look at alonso. in imola, he was very very lucky it was quiet a tight circuit, if not, it's confirmed schumi could have slipped by. imagine this dogfight could have happened in sepang, or in monza or spa, wider circuits, it's sure for schumi to slip by alonso. but then, if it's kimi, it'll take a lot of schumi magic to get pass him. 2ndly, alonso talks too much on and off the track, unlike kimi who lets his racing does his talking. kimi never complains, never says anything thats not relevant. alonso, on other hand, accused ferrari of cheating at imola, where he claims that ferrari had improved their pace so much due to testing they had ( other teams had an agreement of 30 day tests, except ferrari ). then, in nurburgring, post race, he was boastfully talking that even if kimi was in the race, he was confident of victory, which i doubt. that weekend, renault were off the pace, compared to the mclaren. i think, alonso's real victory this season was at sepang. the rest, i don't think he deserved the wins. my conclusion is, this year, the person to take schumi's crown is kimi, not alonso..it'll be a joke 2 me if he takes the crown..no hard feelings guys, but it's just my point of view..

While I agree that Kimi is my preferred driver for the WDC and IMO a faster driver than FA ... it takes the whole package and timing is everything.

Alonso has been given a quick and reliable car and unlike Fisi, when given a chance at the WDC he has performed and won the races and built the WDC lead. This is what it is all about ...

Thus if he maintains the lead until the end, then he IS a worthy champion and played the cards he was dealt well ... and thus all credit to him.

Alonso is as worthy a champion as some others who won the title in the last decade. Some others won due to crashes or what have you, while Alonso and Kimi have been very clean and remarkably mature this year. Either one would be worthy in my book.

FA and KR are the future of F1, at least as it stands right now. I think they are above all the others such as JB or JPM. Just like MS - MH and AP - AS before them. However, just like PSK said, it takes a complete package to win a championship and let's see who wins this 2005 WDC first before anything else.

I completely disagree with you. Alonso is as worthy a champ as Kimi would be. They are both top notch drivers, and the only way to prove who is better would be by putting them both in the same car, which probably won't happen any time soon. Winning a W.C. not only takes driver skill, but also takes performance and reliability of the car. Kimi's car now appears to be faster than Alonso's, but it comes at the price of reliability. They seem to slowly be finding the right balance between performance and reliability - however it will be an uphill battle for the remainder of the season.

Along with the 2 afore mentioned drivers, don't count Montoya out either - he's as good as, or better than Kimi and Alonso.

How about Villeneuve or Hill ? Were they worthy or just in the right car at the right time too ?

Villeneuve was a great racer and IMHO worthy. Hill was a glorified test driver who happened to sit in the car at the right time. Having said this, I recommed the book "Racers" to anybody who has any doubts over Hill's qualifications. He was more than a test driver, but that still doesn't make me like him.
    :)

About the only unworthy champ I can think of in more recent F1 history is Rosberg. But even he had uncanny car control and staying alive with 1,000 hp turbo is a feat in itself.

Alonso is absolutely worthy of a Word Champ title.

He has taken a mediocre car and has done great with it.

He has been chased by faster cars on his tail and has not faltered.
He has good concentration knowing a faster car is behind him and
he will keep that car there.
Just by memory, (i don't feel like doing research), he has won several races
with only seconds ahead of another car. This takes alot of talent and
discipline. Discipline is a character not often talked about that is a heavy
requirement for any champion. Discipline during pole qualifying, discipline and consistency in launching the car on race starts, discipline during pitstops...

Put him in a McLaren or a Ferrari, I am willing to bet he is fast, and may be faster than Kimi.

I like Alonso better than Kimi. In a weird way, I hope he doesn't win
the F1 championship this year. Kimi wins it and stays with McLaren.
    Then, Alonso goes to Ferrari.

Worthy. While he has had some very good luck this year, and hasn't always been the outright quickest, he is fast week-in and-week out, has made very few mistakes (Montreal), and he judges his pace well to always bring the car home. This IS the stuff of Champions, pure pace alone is not always enough.

That said, I'm not a fan of the guy. I've also been put off by some of his post race celebrations which lean more towards gloating to my eyes.

Geese guys we aren't picking a king here. Anyone can be world champ if they win the most points. That's the only thing you need and only 1 man can do it.

At the risk of generating more troll chow ;),

I had my doubts about Alonso: Put in his seat by a manager that also runs the team, given the best of everything at the expense of the second car, ... I used to view Alonso like the 17 year olds in new 360s -- luck replacing skills. Give him a real challenge and he might fold.

But after seening him hold off Schumi at Imola -- he might be the real deal.

I would like to see him manage some close racing, but this season hasn't had the chance: When the McLaren finishes, the performance is as far above the Renault as the Renault is above the rest of the field. Nobody to challenge Alonso except Fisi .... and that would only happen once.

I don't really have anything against Alonso, per se. But I'd love to see Trulli come back in the Toyota and spank Britore. ;)

    You're right. This is important;)

Luck can and usually does play a role in the Championship. In the case of Schumi, they carefully engineered "luck" out of the equation and won on hard work and talent. Even so, you still have to be there to benefit from good fortune. The bottom line is anyone can "luck" into one Drivers' Championship, but not several. If Alonso goes on to win it, he is due all congratulations. But in the long run I would think Kimi is the more likely candidate to become a multiple winner.

I foresee another round of the Senna-Prost years with Kimi vs Alonso. IMHO they're both the real deal and will battle each other for future championships. Both of them will end up as multiple champs.

Talentwise I see these two in the MS group (with the difference that MS has already proven his stuff since he is also older). And the rest of the field on a different lower level.

Hmm, let's see: The youngest driver to win a GP (and while doing so lapping the champ). Soon the youngest driver to win the title.

It took others (Mika, RB) about 100 GPs to just get to their first victory.

Although I prefer Kimi over Alonso. I don't Think he should be knocked for being WC. He has made some stupid comment's in the past. Maybe that's about being too young and new to the sport.

    FA is a great driver.
I like his style: brakes late in a straight line before flicking the wheel with agressive movement.

    But I prefer Raikkonen.

Since when does being the youngest driver to win a GP make you the 2nd fastest driver on the grid after KR? Did I miss this rule somewhere?
