I may be moving there for work and am contemplating on whther to ship my car there. I realize that it's going to be inpractical on many levels, such as low speed limits everywhere, the salt air, a lot of pot holes, no local Ferrari dealer, but I'm trying to find someone with first hand knowledge to make sure the things I've heard are true.

If anyone has any insight, I'd love your opinion.

    thanks!

I say don't. I have a cousin who lived there for 15 years, and it doesn't make sense. You need to understand that the people in the Islands have a different sense of time and life than you and I. So if the brakes on your car goes out in the middle of a mountain turn, you just put the car up on blocks and do a brake job right there on the spot. Well, kinda. You see mon, dis is harder than it looks. So maybe I finish tomorrow, maybe I don't. In da meantime, my cousin's house is right over der.

And then there is the salt air.

My advice is to learn how to swim like a fish in their water. After all, it is their island.

Don't even think about it! The roads are horrible, and the other drivers are really bad. You'll never get over 25-30mph anyway. The Virgin Islands may look like paradise in pictures, but there are a lot of underlying problems. There is a lot of crime, and the locals resent wealth. A Ferrari would be the worst thing you could possibly take down there. Get some cheap POS that you don't care about.

DO NOT DO THIS! I have experience USVI, BVI, Aruba (shares with friends) and we bought nothing but local junk to drive. We see and laugh about those that have nice cars....or we drool with envy over their ability to throw money away.

Clearly you haven'e spent much time there or you wouldn't ask. I've spent a fair amount of time on various Islands (over a year total)... I'd get a landcruiser or a jeep. wouldn't consider anything else.

    DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT

Absolutely, positively, without a doubt, NO!

I can't think of one valid reason why you would want to do that. Actually, I can't think of any reason at all, valid or not.

most Islands are too small to even warm up the engine by the time you made it from one end to the other. St. Thomas the only real big one will allow you to get the engine hot but only if you could make it from one end to the other.
    Like the other said...bad idea.

junker or small SUV. Remember most islands are left driven.

I just moved back from St. Thomas to SoFla and would be happy to sell you my 08 Mitsubishi Outlander with about 3k miles. White. You would have to be nuts to ship a ferrari there. You won't be able to drive it on the roads without totally destroying it. Parking would be a disaster. And to get it fixed? You've got a better chance of seeing God. It just won't work. If you do your homework its probably better to buy there. To ship a car costs you shipping on either Tropical or Crowley. Plus you have to pay duty. If the car is non-us made it is more duty. Let me know if you need any other St. Thomas advice. I was there to join an EDC if you know what that is.
