Is David Lee on Ferrarichat?

Marcel has recently done an excellent series with Simon Kidston. Great to watch and each time I hear Marcel talk he reminds me what the very fabric of Ferrari is, the passion and the very human story of Enzo Ferrari and how that was translated into the cars Ferrari built. Not to mention the interesting stories of individual cars.

 

I don't care about his car collection.. what more important is his retirement account...

David Lee Roth.

 

I don't care about what David LEE knows about Ferraris however he has a nice collection and I have found MANY people that have large collections know very little about the cars which is OK by me I met him only once and he was very nice to me and I love what he did to the DINO with the V8 ... and I have seen photos shared by others of car shows at his store .... so that's all that we need of a high profile car collector .... he seemed nice enough to me....

 

yes I remember that it was very nice ... he is a wealth of knowledge .... and it is correct his report is worth a bunch on a car not just for the info he provides but also because it is Marcel that is providing it .....and I remember his F12 is the best looking F12 I recall

 

Indeed. Not only is his historic stuff incorrect, most of his tech and base knowledge is too. He talks about 7 years of warranty, inaccurate specs, incorrect figures etc. I'm sure he likes Ferraris and enjoy his cars, but he is not an expert in any way.

Truth be told, I have a bit of a hard time watching any of the videos he is in, as it gets too cringey to hear him talk as an "expert".

At the end of the day he is a jeweller, not even a watch guy only. He basically made his fortune becoming a major Rolex distributor. He is not that big in terms of super high end and rare watches etc. Not even sure he deals in Patek.

My pops and David's pops (Mr. Lee) were next-door office neighbors in Downtown L.A for a decade. They spoke often. Maybe every day. Mr. Lee always spoke of real estate investments he was tied up in in Hong Kong. This was during the late 80's early 90's. At the time, Hing Wah Lee Jewelry was mainly dealing with jade jewelry. David it took it to the next level and some by positioning the brand/store in key asian-american markets and branching off into other high-end jewelry. That was all David Lee. Meanwhile, Mr. Lee's real estate bets were starting to pay off. More firepower to grow the Hing Wah Lee brand. Mr. Lee did past away about a decade ago. Great guy. Funny guy. Full of energy. I did speak to him quite a bit, but I was just a kid at the time.

Just my personal opinion, I don't think they "need" the Jewelry business to maintain success. David is beyond set and more likely keeping the Hing Wah Lee brand alive to honor his father's legacy.

Tacori was also in the same building for a good decade (or more). Tacori also blew up from the next generation (children of the founder) taking the business to the next level.

 

Figured I'd throw this out there... I've only spoken/met David a handful of times. I spoke with his pops much more often. From the few times I met him when I was young and from the last time I saw him a few years ago, he's the same guy. He's genuinely a cool guy. Not a d*ck by any means at all. Some people become *******s as their wealth grows. He is also genuinely a sports car enthusiast. When he was a teen, he would talk cars with my pops all the time, so he's definitely not putting up some front to sell some Rolexes. I'll even go out on a limb and say he's more passionate about cars than jewelry/watches. He might not know everything about them... most people don't, but he's enjoying what he can afford and likes to share his toys with others.

 

If this project Dino doesn't show a passion for cars, I don't know what does. (should've tightened up those front bumpers tho )

I am happy you posted this because while I don't think anyone was trying to bad talk David, the thread was kind of turning into a "here's what David doesn't know". Again, I don't think anyone meant it that way, but I would feel bad if he came across this thread.

 

There are valid points in this thread. He's no Joe Sackey or Marcel. Collectively, Fchatters will provide you better info, but you have to sift through all of it to make any sense of it. David is presenting to the masses in a video package for entertainment purposes. He's a collector, not a historian. He's one of the boys. Just like any fchatter here with a nice collection who come on to shoot the sh*t with fellow enthusiasts.

For me, it's nice to recollect some very old memories when I was a young kid/teen. My folks retired from that industry 20 years ago and it is nice to see people who used to share the same space together move onto bigger and better things.

 

Did anyone ever order one? I know he made a deal with the shop that made it that he would take the orders so he could profit. Everyone I know who watched him talk about that car was turned off from him sensationalizing or trying to over hype it saying it has an F40 engine block and it is but it's also a 308 engine block.

 

His target audience is here in San Gabriel Valley where Asian loves Rolex and Ferraris. The fact that he holds his car meeting in front of his jewelry stores says something.

I guess I just want to make it clear.

I don't think any or at least many have an issue with David Lee.

It's great he loves the cars and he puts them out there for all to see which is KILLER. Its great that people get to see these great cars.

Some of his cars are really great... Like that dino is a very cool car.

He just isn't an "authority" on the cars like some of the younger crowd assumes he is because he owns some big cars.

I don't think he puts himself out as an expert. He gets asked to talk about his cars and he does. No harm no foul. But the original poster suggested he would be a good source of info... And while he isn't a dummy and certainly has experience and ownership of great cars. The amazing and vast knowledge on here dwarfs his knowledge (and mine) and really we all benefit that is the brain trust of Ferrari chat.


Also an unsung hero on here is @miurasv that guy knows his stuff!
