I've heard that NVH on the F50 is "bad" as the engine is bolted on directly on the body without mountings or subframes, hence excessive vibrations.

Is the vibration really that bad ?

    How abt tyre roar ?

    Is it bearable ?

No, it's really, really bad. I was in an F50 with 200 miles on the clock, and when I got out it felt like I needed surgery on my spine. It's bad.

Can u imagine MS and RB doing 70+ laps in their raw machine ???

No wonder with the Enzo..they've added subframe, good quality engine mountings to make it so comfortable.

There are testers who claimed that if you dial out the sporty exhaust note of the Enzo..it's a quiet and refine as a Lexus !

I guess I've never felt it to be bad, but the most I've ever driven the F50 at once is only about 100 miles. I'd complain about the heat before the vibration I guess...

Do u feel any excessive vibration even when the gear is in neutral ?

Coz the engine is bolted directly to the tub, hence even at idling, the vibration claimed by many to be harsher than one on a car with subframe or one mounted to the body with proper engine mountings.

I honestly never noticed that there are vibrations...at all compared to other sports cars. I mean, it is no Lexus...you hear everything, and do feel everything...so I am not sure about excess. My Elise Motorsport has MUCH more vibration than anything else I've been in...plus rough low RPM. A couple weekends ago when I took the F50 to Crystal Cove, I did my usual, fired up the car to warm it up and wipe down the car while waiting...so I've never driven the car w/o warming it up first...and I didn't feel that there were more vibration than my Honda S2000. I will pay extra attention the next time I drive the car...probably a couple weeks from now.

    fuse,
I'm sure you know this, but it needs more than just sitting at idle to warm up. The "warm up" is generally just a minute or two idling followed by 5-10 minutes of keeping revs under 3-4,000 or so until your oil temp is up. But, anyway, I'm sure you don't wipe the car down and then redline out of the driveway.

I just let the water temp come up a bit before I even drive it. The oil temp takes quite a few miles to even warm up. When the oil temp is normal range, that is when you start feeling the radiated heat from the engine compartment. I'd also compaint about the poor visibility of the display before vibrations...it is very dark and very hard to read during the day.

I think if I ever redlined out of the driveway...it'd be the last time I get the drive it...or any of his torys for that matter...that would suck very badly...

It should not be that bad at all...it is a V12...inherently balanced and smooth with little vibration....that is one of the hallmarks of V12s. This is not a 4 banger or thumping V8 we are talking about.

F430-Monza, can you fill your profile out so we get to know you better.

But there's no engine mountings at all for the F50 !

And there's no subframe to hold engine to chassis and engine was bolted diredctly to chassis just like an F1 car.

I think there are lots of owners of F50 and Ferrari Spa even admitted their mistake by adopting such a direct mounting of engine to chassis...hence the "excessive" NVH on the F50 as compared to the Enzo which they've used liquid filled engine mountings and a separate subframe to damped out NVH...hence if you dial out the sporty exhaust note of the Enzo...you will probably think it's a Lexus due to the new found refinement over the F50 !

There are even comments that a good 4 banger like a 2400cc 2004 model Camry is more refined than the F50, due to it's liquid filled engine mounting and subframe to give good NVH !

I think alittle mystery about me is good for this board !

the engine in the F50 is solidly mounted to the carbon tub as it's an integral part of the chassis- the rear suspension feeds loads into it! That's also why it's an iron block. Allied to this, carbon resonated pretty well, so there's more vibration to start with and then a chassis made out of something that like to transmit it- so it is quite full on.

I've only been in the F50 on track, and there was more to be interested in than NVH, but I guess it wasn't worse than any other full on sportscar- Elise motorsport is probably a good comparison!

For me, the vibration and so on is a part of the F50's attraction; and I'm sure if I ever have one I'll have something else for long road trips.

It was all part of demonstrating the F1 car for the road philosophy of the F50.

    Enjoy it!

does anyone have an auto magazine test of the car from 1995? perhaps the testers made a comment about excessive nvh....

    Fuse pegged it spot on.
Heat, dash display and noise are the only 3 complaints I can think of. Even at that, the noise is so wonderful it would only be over a long trip that one could consider it annoying. The heat falling into the cockpit from the radiator is intense. That dash is at best an after thought and leaves a lot to be desired on a car where reading the gauges at a glance is so important. Out of direct sunlight its very nice and easliy read at a glance. Vibration? Never even a thought entered my mind regarding this. Driving down a rutted city street you know you are strapped into something that can take you to the speed of heat, but vibrations.....no.

The one that I did the engine rebuild on got Tubi headers, test pipes and mufflers. The only thing I ever heard like it was on the Fiorano track! We are in full agreement on all fronts.
