You're not alone. My circadian rhythm is off--I could be tired as heck and when it hits the late hours of the day my body decides it's time wake up and go racing.

I cannot tell you the last time I got a solid 8 hours of sleep - or even a solid 7 hours.
I almost always wake up after 2.5-3 hrs to go pee, and then 2.5-3 hours after that again...
Sometimes I can get right back to sleep, but most of the time, it takes anywhere from 45 min to 2 hours...

I can be dead-tired and go to bed at midnight-1am - and I will lie there until 3-330am, sometimes 430am...

If I take a 3mg melatonin I can sleep up to 5 hrs at most before I have to get up and pee, but I HATE having to rely on a pill to sleep...

I KNOW I am not getting much REM sleep... and that's not good.

I've started to do the 2-3 hour wake up and go pee, too.

    Sucks getting old....

I go to bed generally around 2:30-3am, if I don't want to get up to pee at 5-6am
I cannot drink ANYTHING after about 7pm....

Circadian rhythms shift as we age. Older people get sleepy earlier than they did when they were younger. We tend to go to sleep earlier and awaken earlier. I used to be a “night owl”. Now I’m barely keeping my eyes open at 9-10 pm. So I googled what the problem might be and learned it’s a normal physiological phenomenon. Nothing’s wrong with me ‘cept gettin’ old.

And I’ve since become a much earlier riser. It’s a myth that that older people need less or more sleep. We still need about the same amount of sleep those under 65.

The evolutionary theory to go along with "old people go to sleep early and get up early, while young people stay up late and sleep in" correlates that to the lessening of night vision ability as we age..

So, you need the young (good night vision) members of the tribe to be "on duty" during the dark - then us oldsters take over early in the morning.

Good theory, but who knows? :)

Good thinking. Let's put the youngers on point and us oldsters can bring up the rear. ;)

When I was working, my alarm clock radio was set to turn on the news at 6am.
I'd be at my home office at 8am or the plant at 9am.

Now that I'm retired, I most often sleep a few hours at a time on the couch, and my 'alarm clock" is when the DVR reboots at 5AM. :p

Have been an early riser for quite a long time. For the past few years, I wake up at 5:30 a.m. 7-days a week with no need for an alarm and I try to be asleep by 10 pm. Really like being up before anyone, enjoying my morning coffee, catch up on overnight news and then a morning workout and into the office.

wow going on 2 years since i last comment on this post, how life has change for me, first sold both my cars and got a new to me 308gtsi and second moved on in business (felt like the right time to cash out with both) now with a little financial stability working with my family in their small business just filling in my days i still get up early 4;30-5am only m-f weekends 7am lol.

the workforce sucks nowadays, i tried my best to make sure my workers get what they needed for a good life but there is no loyalty for a company. i was never flashy with what i made (big house, cars and vacations) just showed i was a family man and never showed off my toys to my workers. but at the end of the day i still had to work harder than everyone else to keep things going (yes it was mine and that is what you do), but who had this going on and need time off or going home early etc. so, when a group of young ambitious people made me an offer i jumped on it, to say i had tears in my eyes was not for selling my baby but for joy not having to deal with the BS collages created with these kids today. What a relief for my kids, son is law=enforcement with 3 years in 17 to go and he gets a pension not bad he will be 41yo and daughter in her third year at Northeastern business major but who knows where that will lead too. either way kids today are playing a game, and they really do not understand the way the world works there is so many things that play a part, just hope they wake up.

As the next (slower) chapter has phased in about 5 years ago and consistent pattern emerged, I’m a early riser early to bed kinda guy.
    Incidentally, 90 days sober.

I’m modifying my position on 5 AM awakening.

If ducks or deer are involved, I’m in.

    Otherwise……

My new position on this is, "NOPE."

After many years of early rising, I've fixed my sleep pattern and I'm getting 7-8 solid hours of sleep each night. I now get up around 6AM instead of 4:30-5AM, am much more rested. I've tossed my afternoon nap ( mostly) in the trash and go to bed at a reasonable hour, when I'm sleepy, NOT when I'm tired. The biggest lesson I've learned is the difference between tired and sleepy.

So 5AM wake up to get an early start on my day is no longer in the cards.

I love getting up at 5am. I get to drive to work before the traffic, get to be home early enough to get the kids from school. Then when I 'sleep in' on the weekends I still get up at a reasonable hour.

I get up at 5 am every morning. M-F I get a workout in before work, on the weekends I do whatever I can before the masses get up and about. Go to sleep around 10 pm on the weekdays, sometimes later on the weekends and sneak a nap if needed. Always been an early riser, even as a kid. 7 hours is a good sleep amount for me.
