You might have some spyware on your system.

CoolWebSearch, and many other spyware programs hijack your local DNS settings so you can't load certain search pages.

    mmmmh.

Confusing. It does the same on both PCs at home. It does it with either FireFox or IE ... same thing.

Could it be a router thing

What exactly did you do to solve it? I can't seem to get it! doh.

I ran ad-aware twice and turned off the computer for about 5 minutes and then restarted it. I ran ad-aware again. Nothing came up except for insignificant things. Then I did what tvrfreak and Peters suggested. I was finally able to run a disc cleanup and defragment. That took about an hour or so. Once I get mozilla to run I will probably use it instead of IE. Later today I will do what Schatten and vraa suggested. I also ran the windows update. It seems to work better now but I am not sure exactly what fixed the inability to get to certain sites. As long as I can get to FerrariChat and get my daily fix I am ok. :) I sent my hijackthis logfile to Schatten and he didn't find anything problematic with it. He recommended that I update from XP SP1, to SP2, so I will check on doing that. I will report again later after I do some further changes.

This cleared up the problems I had and I was able to get to the sites I couldn't get to before.

If you are going through a Cable Modem provider and your real-time-web-scan anti-virus is enabled (specifically Trend Micro) it may be causing routing problems.

Happened to me in Houston... weird.

I had a problem accessing url's in browsers though my Eudora email was working fine. I took the advice on one of the threads to speed up Firefox by changing the settings. When I changed the settings back to the default, the problem went away.

    I already use FireFox ...
I cleaned its cache, ran a Disk Cleanup, ran Ad-Aware until everything is clean, changing the setup like LetsJet mentioned did not change a thing.
I also did th ipconfig/renew and all thing.

    WTF?

Just did a defrag and virus scan (clear) ... restarted, and still no change! So I guess I'm gonna have to do the router thing ... eeeewww. I hate that!

Just went in the router and released and renewed the DHCP (whatever that is!!) ... apparently no change!

Do you mean changing it back to default?

    Just so your clear:

    1. I made changes to config per instructions on other thread
    2. Problems started - Not being able to connect to websites
    3. Change the configs back to the default and no more problems

can you ping google? just ping www.google.com ? if so... please let us know what the IP is. This is important, since the hosts file can be modified by some spyware/malware/redirectionware applications and while you think google is down, it isn't, it is directed somewhere else, to another IP that no longer exists.

Just a bit ago every single website I tried to get on was not working. My entire internet was messed up but I was still bale to get on AIM and I was also able to download music off of ARES but at a very slow rate. It was really weird. It all started while I was trying to google something.

    Well, it was the router.
I simply resetted it (with the button on the router) ... and now everything seems to be working again.
I have no clue what exactly was wrong ... but now it works!

Thanks to everyone for the help, I'm damn lucky FChat kept on working!!! :)
