Before joining Mercedes, Hamilton was 4th or 5th every year at McLaren, 2008 aside.

    What would be the point?

The title will go to one of the Mercedes drivers, of course.

    That's obvious.

I suspect there may be quite a few hamfan boys on here who are scared to come out of the closet....in fear of being trampled on by the rest of the herd.

Maybe someone can post up a poll? As per the OP original question ?

So you actually think that Hamilton let Rosberg win 3 races on purpose to polish up his selfconfidence before the winter break to result in several wins in the beginning of the new season???
Well I guess you answered yourself....
You guys never run out of excuses when "the greatest ever" does not win....
    That is easy: Mercedes

He did have 22 wins in his 5 seasons at McLaren, which would place him at #3 for total career wins by the current grid (Vettel and Alonso have more). Finished 1st, 2nd and 4th (2x) in the WDC.

So now what you are saying is that this lean mean fighting machine hasn't the psychological strength to finish the season and win the last few races, and is so intense that he didn't care that Nico, the guy he likes to crash and smash whenever he can, wins every one of them.

This year, he didn't choke at various races at all, like Baku amongst others where his lack of attention to the simulator at a new track cost him a chance at pole and win?

If he hasn't the best car, Elton is a smidge over average at best, he didn't set the world alight at McLaren when the car wasn't the best, or one of the best, out there. He now sits in the best car by a mile, he only has one rival, his teammate, who is such a nice guy, he seems unable to actually fight for wins as well as others would. If a schumi, or a Vettel, or an Alonso were in that team (or indeed, ole jenson 'interceptor' button, who was much more consistent in their time together) then Elton would be firm number two. He hasn't the race craft, technical ability (errrr, tell me which button to press, I'm going home, I can't drive like this) nor guile to beat any of them.

His crude lunges and bashes would be met with the same back, twice as hard, from any of them, and he'd find himself, as he did when taking out his sexual frustration on Massas Ferrari when losing the ***** cat doll, with broken suspension.

The only car that will win the championship this year, as I predicted at the start of 2014, 2015 and 2016, will be Mercedes, no one else is in it. You won't win much money betting on that. Until the rules allow testing, despite people's hope for next year, I don't see things changing much at all.

As an aside, I can't believe the profanity filter removes that word, is it really so offensive? and this time, it being in the context of a pop group, so I didn't even realise it would be an issue..... You live and learn! :)

    Finished 2nd in 2007, 1st in 2008.
He in fact drove better in his first year than during the next one.

Since, twice 5th, and 3 times 4th in the WDC until landing the drive at Mercedes.

    I feel the same.

Until there is a new formula announced, and testing is allowed, I expect Mercedes to keep their advantage and stay ahead for a few more years.

I also think Mercedes will withdraw at the end of their contract with FOM, circa 2020, having won everything.

Do you really believe that Nico was racing against a fully motivated Hamilton at the end of last season, after Lewis wrapped up the WC??? And then the unforced errors at the beginning of this season for Lewis, whether it was bad strategy, poorly timed pitstops, and what-have-you. You saw the races, you know what happened. Those last 3 races were a gift from Hamy to Nico.

You ever watch baseball, Daytona? You know how when the home team has a lead after the top of the 9th inning, they don't even bat again because the game is won? It's sort of like that. Except Lewis had to race. So instead of going at 100%, he went at 95%. You questioning his psychological strength is quite a stretch.

When everything is equal, meaning both cars at 100%, both drivers at 100%, same pit strategy, Lewis beats Nico every time.

Yeah, no sh*t. You sound so convinced that Nico is an equal or better driver than Lewis, let's place a bet between Lewis and Nico. We start at zero points for each driver, starting from now, and let's see who gains the most points from here to the end of the season......

OK, OK, you made your point, but that will not convince some of us on this forum; we have a different opinion, and we don't think Hamilton is the new messiah. It's sort of like that !!

Is that OK with you to have a different opinion?

Until the cars are better matched, IMHO no driver gets a GOAT title. They are rather insignificant at the moment.

We don't get baseball here, but it's a bit different to not try too hard knowing you are in a good position, than to be virtually crying during and after these supposed gimme races, screaming about injustice on the radio, moaning about how the team is against him, how his pit crew are sabotaging him, moaning to anyone who will listen that they tell him off for kissing bieber in the paddock.....

So we are agreed then, Elton hasn't the emotional strength, psychological strength, nor the honour within his contract, to try to win around nine races in a row for his employer paying him millions per race...... that's awesome.

Hmmmmm, yet on the other hand, we are told he is a voracious, skilful, determined, unbeatable winning machine who can beat anyone on any day...... Guess any day without the word day in it, otherwise, just a slightly above average driver lucky enough to be sitting in the best car of the last three seasons....

Yap, truth is, titles after 2007 have litle value in my mind...2008 because it was a farse, 2009 because it was a fraude, and after that because the cars took completly over the drivers....

    No, we absolutely don't agree.

It has happened plenty of times before where a WC will win with races to spare in the season, and they back off. Again, your argument is rather weak. You are just trolling now.

    Fully agreed.

I remember how some on here never took Vettel serious despite him winning 4 titles and setting a bunch of firsts and records as the youngest driver to do so. Yet they argued it was the car. Funny how Webber never won a title.

Now history repeats itself with Hamilton.

Bottom line is that Vettel and Hamilton will end up in the top 5 of the all time most successful F1 drivers in history. Both will be in a small club with MS, Prost and Fangio.

Vettel beat Webber a lot more convincingly, though. There was an obvious difference between the two.
