Is it OK to remove Axle bolts while in 1st gear?

    This may be another silly question but I am a novice to all this and I want to confirm with you guys.
    I removed both rear axles on my 78 308. the first several bolts I removed by shifting it into 1st gear to keep the axles from turning, can that harm the gearbox/differential?
    I finally figured out the screwdriver in the venthole of the discs method.

    I am not an expert but I was told to put the parking brake on and put in neutral, it worked for me. I would not worry, just enjoy!

    I suspect it won't hurt it. Think of it this way. Which puts more force on the gears - you with a wrench or dumping the clutch with the motor revved up. Granted these cars are not made for repeated burnouts but they can handle a little of it. You with a wrench don't come close to the forces generated that a burnout does. Emergency brake helps too.

    That was my logic behind it as well; there certainly ain't 200 + hp in my muscles :)
    I saw nobody mention that putting it in first gear can also help which fueled my perfectionist paranoia. " May be I did somehting wrong".
