I'm sorry Karen, have you been to Hermansburg in the NT? The whole town is a ghetto and every Australian should see it before they presume to criticise other countries.

You would not be happy stopped at the lights in an open Ferrari in many parts of Sydney other than Redfern. I would not consider driving through Macquarie Fields to name but one example.

We also have plenty of beggars in Sydney, plus lots of homeless people. Blame Neville Wran for that, he had the idea of saving money by closing 80% of mental homes.

Every country has to deal with the results of its history. In the US its slavery, the civil war and prohibition, here its the British colonial destruction of indigenous culture and, in NSW at least, the Fraser govt suspending normal immigration process during the Lebanon civil war. Nobody is perfect, but our gun laws clearly create a safer community.

Interesting read Kimbo ... thought you might be an old geezer like me until I saw you spell. it aint BRYLECREAM its BRYLCREEM.

Remember a 'little dab'l do ya" ... Unbelievably I saw brylcreem in Woolies in one of my incredibly rare shopping trips with the good wife ... I resisted the urge.

Keep up the pressure on JM those RAAF types need keeping in their place ... hoping the father in law (RAAF '40 -'45 .. Beaufighters/Mosquitoes) can't hear me :):) LOLOLO

it would be better if there were no guns at all except for the military but that would be in an idealistic world ... the situation in the US is insane .... and insanity is a large part of the problem
sounds like a good man to me Phil :)

Plus Mossies being one of my favourite aircraft .... poor old kimbo has to justify his poor decisions somehow :p

Why would any sane person elect to be in a slow moving target on a battlefield

My old man used to use it and swore by it.............................till he lost his hair!

Haven't seen the stuff in years,do they still make it????

JM probably only joined the RAAF because he failed the Army psyche test!..................L.O.L.

When he answered "Yes" to the question "When you are in high places do you feel like jumping off"? They knew he was Airforce material!!!

You'd have to be NUTS to engage for 9 years and I heard the flyboys would take anyone out of desperation, certified or not!!

Might be a slow moving target but then I know there'd be at least a 3 second delay from the time you spotted me to any bomb you'd drop JM so I'd have a good chance I reckon.......L.O.L!

    Bravo, Sir, Bravo !

It is well documented within the social sciences the enclaves of inequality that are bieng perpetuated by fiscal gentrification, social disadvantage & cultural disadvantage.

What is observed is clusters of disadvantage & lack of infastructure compounded further by inequality or lack of access to basic services.

Take a look at caravan parks & satelite communities surrounding outlying & reigonal centres.

Actually the way they classify you for each military unit type is by your signature :

    1. an "X" is obviously the army type
    2. If you sign your name legibly then Navy
    3. If you sign someone else's name then you are air force :p

I'm being a little unfair here, as I have seen some of my army mates sign "X!" :p

They are the smart ones :D

Just before I got my honourable discharge (HD) in '83 my CO had suspicions about my sanity so sent me to a psychologist and psychiatrist for a full examination .... result .... I am perfectly sane !!! :p

    So much for psychs.

BTW my CO was a total arsehole and got sent to a desk job in Canberra for his effort in trying to railroad me .... govt enquiry took 2 months but in the end I was exonerated and given the option of HD or employment continuation (with the ramifications that bought with it ).

Just remembering the navy reminded me of an incident in Hawaii back in '79 where the RAAF had been in Oahu for 2 weeks going out to all the nightclubs, strip clubs, etc with no issues and bouncers quite happy to let us in.

Then the RAN arrive and the next night ALL Aussies were banned from EVERYWHERE

Submariners were the worst, nothing but sheer animals in human guise, one died trying to dive into a resort pool from the upper floor of a very tall resort ... thought he could easily make the distance from the resort to the pool 20-25 metres from the resort wall

I met his mate at WANG computers 10 years later who confirmed the story, it's a small world

Haha, I caught the end of Black Gold yesterday, some bloke was late for work and took a short cut across some ladies land. She drove to the site where they were drilling for oil, pulled a double shotgun out, loaded it and shot his tyres. This was in Texas of course.

This is not out of line,I have always, since having been on the land in a former life, thought most of the above.
Probably more so in the 'States, they have quite a few dangerous critters, compared to here.

What the writer doesn't,interestingly broach,is the assault type weapon argument.

I can't see why a farmer needs an AR-15.. but they don't need to totally "disarm" either.. how hard is it to be "sensible" and have an accommodating middle ground between extreme camps you have to wonder.

I remember limits coming in at the farm for no semi-auto's after Port Arthur.. but we could keep all the normal range of shotguns and rifles of various and reasonable calibres..

But even hinting at any "limit" is anathema to some of our American friends.. and just makes them run for the nearest ammo store to buy even more.

Throw in opportunistic politicians, of every bent and angle, then real progress is hard..

Lastly: Is the NRA fully funded by, and representative of, individual members? do they receive anything from gun manufacturers?

edit: Why DOES America seemingly have such regular instances of mass shootings?

Seemingly other countries have guns too, and no country is immune to the horror of mass shooting.. but other countries go YEARS between instances but in America it's barely months.. just a statistical function of any large population when you always have someone go "postal"? Too many big guns too easily obtained for when something snaps? An aggressive culture? Some combo of the above?

I think he does , because he talks about needing semi automatic firearms, which the media generally call "assault rifles".
The following pictures show 2 of the most common semi automatic rifles and are functionally identicial, both are magazine fed .223 semi automatic rifles, and neither is an "assault rifle" . (Semi automatic = 1 shot per each pull of the trigger.)

Nearly all pistols BTW are "semi automatic" too.

The term assault rifle describes a firearm that is "fully automatic" i.e. pull trigger = keeps shooting until the ammuntion is exausted, or one releases the trigger. Some of these guns can also shoot in burst mode ( 3 shots) or semi auto mode. (Fully auto firearms are not and have never been available to the "public" in Australia BTW )
