Hey, I've notied that Wolfgang's O/T "LAmborghini" thread has spurned activity in the European forum like we haven't seen for months! So many beautiful pictures, "Lamborghini-porn" :) :) at its best...

Is Lamborghini today so much more exciting than Ferrari, perhaps? Do the extreme lines of the Murcielago and Gallardo stir our emotions more than the more "restrained" and "civilised" F430, 575M and 612? Has Ferrari really gone too "civilised", perhaps is it time to go back to a more aggressive philosophy like Lamborghini?

    As an enthusiast I wonder...

I don't know! But I do know that I would like Ferrari to be a little bit less conservative again!

No. Lamborghini was always more outregaous than Ferrari. It had to be. Well, from the Countach on anyway. Ferrari doesn't need to that kind of in-your-face design to get attention, and I suppose many Ferrari-drivers wouldn't care for such a car anyway. The Testarossa was probably the most obscene looking car Ferrari ever put on the market, and compared to a Countach, even the Testarossa looks somewhat bland.

It's all a matter of taste really. Lamborghini has done some beautiful understated cars with the 350/400GT, but in the end, Lamborghini's demand attention.

But how is Ferrari more conservative than, let's say, twenty years ago? Is the F430 really that conservative? Surely the Enzo is pushing the envelop in terms of external design. And what about something remarkable as the 575 Superamerica? Granted, the 550 Maranello was a big step down in terms of extreme design from the F512M, but it was a whole different concept, being more of a front-engined GT tourer.

Twenty years ago, the Testarossa was extreme, but what about the Mondial and the 412? Or the 328 for that matter?

And really, what is so 'extreme' about the Gallardo? What is so extreme about a car which has virtually no nose-section, since the A-pillars start right above the front wheels (Renault Twingo anyone?), and which has a back end that clearly is influenced by the most recent design-style of...Volkswagen.

You clearly hate the Gallardo don't you?? :D ;)
Well, i actually liked it...... for the first two years!! Now, i think it's getting dated and it just looks like a flat Volkswagen beetle!!! :D ;)
The Murcie on the other hand is awesome!!! Really like that car!!! Extreme extravaganza like a Lambo should be!!! Just like the last versions of the Diablo! (yes Wolfie, i admit it, they really are awesome!!)

I would like to see Ferrari build again a rear engined V12 supercar like the 512 series!!!! :) (the F50 and Enzo don't count for obvious reasons)

Well, what's there to hate? I find it remarkable that something like the Gallardo is applauded as much as it is, but again, a matter of taste.

I just feel that both Ferrari and Lamborghini have a certain style and it is up to the consumer to choose between the two (or just have both if money is not an object). Ferrari shouldn't want to become like Lamborghini, nor vice versa.

I also don't feel Ferrari has gone more conservative over the years. Ferrari's have mostly been styled in a more subtle way and exactly that is what makes them beautiful. To my eye anyway. But hey, I completely adore the 400GT/412i and even the 612 Scaglietti, so what do I know? :D

(I hate the Diablo as well, but the Murcielago is right on the mark. For Lamborghini-standards anyway :D )

Change that into 'mid-engined' and we have an agreement :D

Funny though, since the mid-engined twelve cylinder, doesn't make up much of Ferrari's heritage. Apart from the racecars. Only the 365GT/512BB and the Testarossa (and it's derivatives) were built in this configuration. I wonder if there really is a justification for doing something like that again, apart from the market wanting it.

Lamborghini more exciting than Ferrari? Not at all IMO!
It has always been and will always be a very personal matter.
Both company's have their own identity and strategy although they're often fishing for the same customers.
Some like Ferrari's, some like Lambo's, some like them both,... Difficult to explain why...
In some way Lamborghini's have always been somewhat the more agressive. In the '80's the Testarossa already was way more civilised than the Countach IMO fe... It's a completely different design and you will like it... or not...
Lamborghini hardly had a GT in the same style as the 456GT, 575M or 612S fe... they only have road monsters... IMO they lack some style. Lamborghini's are without a doubt very fast, very impressive, very powerful, very exclusive, very breathtaking,... but they still lack some style IMO...
Ferrari has road monsters too... but they can offer more...

The way I see it they are both great cars with a lot of things in common (power, speed, exclusivity, Italian design, excitement,...aso) but the finishing touch by Ferrari is style while Lamborghini chooses brutal aggression...
That's why Ferrari has a larger range of cars too IMO... it's difficult to make a 4-seater GT look aggressive... A car like that needs style...

It's like comparing a majestic horse to a raging bull :) They actually have the perfect logo's! They say it all! :D

"Bulls belong on a farm, stallions belong on a racetrack" :);)

Just my opinion of course :);) Luckily we all have our own...

You know what i mean!! ;)
When i say mid-engined, people could say: the 550/575 and 612 is mid-engined!! And that's true actually!! Front-midengined!!! The 456 is Really Front engined!!

BTW: good to see another guy who likes the 612 scaglietti!!! It might be HUGE and look bland in pictures, but the design is great IMO and seeing it in the flesh in the real world is breathtaking!! It is after all a 4-seater GT! Name one 4-seater that looks better!!

From my experience : no .

Only drove 2 Lambos ( Countach 25 and Diablo 6.0 ) . Great cars ( Masochist even for the 25th ) but a run of the mill Modena was more exciting to drive .

The Countach was way too harsh without the compensations of an F40 . The car floated above 80 mph , brakes were useless, gearbox and clutch really hard to manoeuvre , 0 visibility , cramped cockpit .

The Diablo was so civilized after the 25th. Noise and power were amazing but you still could feel the weight/AWD . It lacked the nimbleness of a 360 or a lighter car.

    WOW, what an interesting thread!
Thank you so much Andrea to start it and all the others to contribute on it!

Well, for sure I have to say something….
@Alex: “I guess tomorow Wolfgang will passionately defend the bulls”

IMO its ALL a matter of taste!!!
Some like blond girls, others red girls or brunettes?!
It would be boring and cruel if we would like & …. all the same.

    What is it all about?
To me, it’s a very personal decission (maybe selfish?) what I`m driving.
I do not ask or take care what others are thinking about my garage. I haven`t asked Anja when I bought the testa – she still don`t like the testa and she does not like the diablo!
Anyway, I`m an egoist (only with cars!) and its my car and my pleasure.
Otherwise I do not command my wife or anybody else what she/he should buy to get her personal pleasure.

    What is a personal pleasure:
    - dreaming of a nice car in the garage
    - getting a heavy full erection when I open the garage door
    - getting excited when I start the engine
    - driving with a big smile & wet pants thru the country
    - felling the power and hearing the sound from the engine and exhaust system
    - lots of PS`s an lots of cylinder capacity

Thats what I feel when I drive my TR, that’s what I feel when I drive a Diablo, Countach, Murcielago or Gallardo.

There are faster & better cars than Ferrari or Lamborghini for less money around – but they do not fascinate me!!!
If you want to drive the best, fastest, most secure, efficiently, economical car – go and buy a Porsche GT2 or GT3 RS!!!!
I have driven this Porsches among all the Ferraris an Lamborghinis an it is the better and more perfect toy for the track, country roads and autobahn.
But…….no emotions, no feelings, no errection.

Remark: As a member of the ILOC I know many Lambo owners and their garages very well. Most of them drove a Porsche, sold the Porsche, bought 1 or 2 Ferraris and than hey went over to Lambo. Today, they still store & drive a Porsche or Ferrari beside the Lambo.
And….they have no prejudices/bad mouth talking about F or P drivers!!
I wish could say the same about P & F drivers regarding L drivers.

    Best
    Wolfgang

Fully agree. To each its own, I wouldn´t like Lamborghinized Ferraris and viceversa. To tell the truth, in recent years Lamborghini had become a bit bland to compete with Ferrari, and that´s a pity. I didn´t like the heavy-metal style of the old Lamborghinis, but it was THEIR OWN style, and that´s what counts in these dark days of mass production.

What I like about Lamborghini is you don't have to "be a member of the club" to buy a new one. You just say, "Who do I make this check out to?"
