Is lift and coast now dead after the latest statements from the FIA?

    Fox Sports reporting the following:

The only permissible radio conversations involve indication of a critical problem with the car, such as puncture warning or damage, an indication of a problem with a competitor’s car, an instruction to enter the pit lane in order to fix or retire the car, marshaling information (for example yellow flag, red flag, race start aborted or other similar instructions), information regarding a wet track, oil or debris in certain corners, or finally instructions to swap position with other drivers.

That would seem to imply they cannot tell them to lift and coast no?

In addition, they will actually have to launch their cars now without the aid of the computer telling them exactly where the clutch will bite:

From now on the clutch bite point may not be changed from the time the car leaves the garage for the first time after the pit lane is open on the day of the race, until after the start lockout period after the race has started.

In addition bite point finder activation by the driver has to be inhibited by disabling any driver button or switch associated with that function. The FIA adds that the “bite point update from the bite point finder should be disabled by setting BBitePointFinderUsed to zero.”

So now it will be harder to start the race and require more skill.

Don't deal with the stupidity of needing "lift & coast" just hide it from the fans. The sort of genius move I'd expect from the FiA

But how will the drivers know if they need fuel savings or how much to coast? Previously the engineers were telling them specifically. Presumably they will at least have to cycle to a different menu on the steering wheel now?

Why not just get rid of the ludicrous rule. Or that just too much common sense?

You mean the fuel burn rule and the total fuel available rule? Yah I'm for that.

I foresee running out of gas on the last lap, and cracked brake rotors, in your future.....

Well they technically can tell them about "critical" items. So I'm sure they can still tell them about brakes. "Critical" is up for interpretation also unless there is something I'm missing. Hopefully that doesn't mean they get to continue advising them on fuel because they have deemed that their fuel burn is "critical" on lap 5 because they will run out on lap 50, etc.

So, Hamilton will have to find his clutch bitting point himself now ?

    That's how I understand it yes....and everyone else too ; )

Advantage to best drivers? I hope so...

We'll probably see some stalls too like in the older days I would assume...and the ensuing chaos that might cause.

Not to be picky, but they can get all the help they want finding the clutch bite point, they just can't change it from the time the car leaves the garage for the first time after the pit lane is open on the day of the race. Kind of a small point, but if the team figures it out right before then, it will be as it is now. But, if they don't they will be stuck.

Presumably it changes though during warm-ups etc? Hence the change? If not, then what is the difference/point of the rule?

Not sure if you realize this, but the more electronics they remove the more it will benefit drivers like Hamilton/Alonso.
This is what Hamilton said about the clutch:
"I guess it depends how they go about doing it. I'm happy - the more control we get the better.

"At the moment we release the clutch but the performance is dictated from the team," he explained. "They will tell you whether to go up or down on torque modes or all those sorts of things.

"Sometimes they calculate it right and sometimes they don't," he added.

"For me the best starts were when I was in Formula 3 and you had a normal clutch.

"They were more fun because I had the control, so if they do it right [in F1] it could be good."

I'm all for it, in the "old days" there where some guys with amazing reflexes at the start...skiping Gilles who was simply out of this world at this, i remember Berger was very good, Alesi even better, than in more recent times but before everything was so controled, Massa was probably the best starter .....

That's ok. I'm all for any rules that would mean drivers rely more on their personal talents in situations such as starts rather than the team's calculations for an automated start.

It sounds like Hamilton thinks it'll benefit him... well, let's see! It might, or we might find that some other driver on the grid has the touch and the feel for quicker starts. :)

    All the best,
    Andrew.

+1. Bring back real tires and no limits on fuel while you're at it. I want to see 100% from start to finish.

If it involves driving an F1 car Hamilton will find a benefit.
