Seems like my hard drive is toast on my laptop but is my data lost? The computer turns on, then asks to start normally or go in safe mode, no matter which choice i go with i end up with a bright blue screen with with some white writing that is there for 3 seconds then it rebots again.... HP had me hit f10 or f8 to get into a screen to test the hard drive which failed. they tell me i need a new harddrive. Can I bring the old hard drive to compusa or someplace to retrieve my data????

For the on-site pros (which I'm not) to best answer your questions, - perhaps best to describe what Laptop model, HD & OS you have.

I don't know how different the laptop HDs are vs Desktop, but I was able to my HD out and take it to a friends house and plug it in and setup as a secondary/slave drive....He was able to recover about 95% of all my stuff....

Data on hard drives can be recovered even if the hard drive's firmware takes a dump. The next question is how much is the data worth to you? A 3rd party company that specialized in data recovery can take your platters off the old hard disk and inside a clean-room, put the platters on a working unit to get the data.

Find a nerd to boot Linux on your computer for you, then you will be able to copy all of your files to an external harddrive if you have one. Then try reinstalling the operating system. Either it'll work then or you'll just get a new harddrive and then reinstall the OS, but either way most of your data will be safe. Trust me, a friend had the same problem; Dell said the harddrive was broken and they were sorry but he would lose all of his data, ... kid down the hall said "no" and he didn't lose a single file.

Seem like your drive is reading something or you would'nt get a blue screen. Try reinstalling windows. Same thing happened to me. Recovered everything. Go get a new harddrive incase it works and format it and use it as a second drive. Copy all your data to the new drive then get rid of the old drive or use it as a second drive . Reinstall windows on the new drive and boom!

When you are done you will have a new primary drive and an old secondary drive. Never trust the secondary drive with data that is important.

Its a pain but it worked.
