Well, it pains me to say it, because all I want to say is that I"m very sorry your car experienced this misfortune -- but any kind of water damage needs to be addressed immediately after it happens, especially with salt water. Salt water sitting in anything will be highly destructive in short order. It's hard to say what it would have taken to resolve immediately after the storm -- but almost a year and a half later, the damage almost certainly has multiplied. Hope you get good advice in this thread and I am again sorry that you had to experience this.

Have to say I am surprised its so bad.

If 430 engines were hard to find it could be fixed but its not worth it. Clean it up, put it back together and make garage art out of it.

You are discovering why insurance companies typically do not entertain repairing flood cars. It never ends. How is the transmission?

Ya I sent it to a hack shop right after the flood and it sat there for 7 months and nothing was done to it. I picked it up and got it running a few weeks after that. So sounds like that could’ve really screwed me.

Out of curiosity was this your car when it was in the flood and you chose to fix it or did you buy it at auction after the flood?

Junk. $200 per liner, $900 per piston. Heads are wrecked too. Any bets on the crankshaft? Motor is scrap metal. Metal in the oil didn't come from the pistons/cylinders.

If it was a Lampredi motor you'd fix it. Its not. Its a door stop.

That's not just toast. That's the overly burnt toast that gives you the nails on the chalkboard feeling when try to to spread cold butter but all you manage to do is make a crunchy sound and turns a once perfectly good piece of bread into worthless sand.

Turn it upside down, I bet if you checked the bearings and connecting rods you' have your answer. I don't see any pics from underneath. Was this a write-off car you bought or your own car?

Ya I’ll have the bottom side open tomorrow hopefully. I bought it from insurance after the flood and brought it straight to a local exotic shop that had it for 8 months and didn’t touch it and took my money and caused more damage than anything. I’m assuming 90 percent of the damage happened in that time. I own a diesel shop and have bought close to 20 flood trucks so I’m pretty familiar with them but parts are also cheaper :/

Far out, pistons and liners toast alright. Top end don't look too bad.

I am looking forward to seeing what the crank and bottom end looks like Nick.

Please post pics when you can.

It looks like you need to turn the crank, get under size bearings, new sleeves, pistons, rings, and cylinder heads. Maybe you can find some used parts. Maserati has a similar engine platform and may be a source of some parts. Be every careful though, they are not exactly the same.
I had a client with a 430 he picked up for a deal and it had a Maserati short block swapped into it. We ended up finding a used 430 engine and swapping it back.
Just letting you know that you may have more options for parts. Do some research and due diligence and see what you come up with.

    I’ve seen worse! :)

Yes, I think you’ll get’er done for less than $25k - but does the title on the car show as “scrapped due to flood”?

rebuilt not scrap. scrap is not able to be registered as parts only.

    anyone is Michigan or nearby?

How does this happen to begin with? As far as the bearings starting to go like that?

crank looks worse in pictures but can’t even feel marks if you run finger across. Will it be ok to run as is with rest of parts new? Downside?

If it really only has 3000 miles its what happens when a motor is run full of debris.

I am simply not going to believe the bearings got that bad and the crank is fine.

Have you opened the transmission yet?

By the way, whats the VIN?

I'm almost afraid to ask, but did someone try to run this motor AFTER immersion? Or did someone with a suspect 430 get incredibly lucky to have his failing engine drowned in a hurricane?

I bought it after hurricane so im not sure what owner did but seems like a lot of damage for only 3k miles on it. i bought it and basically pulled the plugs and shot out whatever salt and water that was in it and replaced coils and plugs. ran after that and shot some more water out of the exhaust but seemed to run ok after that, only reason I pulled motor was the shards of metal in the oil. I can't tell if somehow I damaged it or if it somehow was damaged before.

Oh you damaged it. I would say the bearings and crank are the only parts with damage from running. The rest of the damage was done. Have the crank polished and measure it. if it cleans up and measures good, run it with standard bearings. If not, turn it first under size and then run it. These cranks are very hard and take a lot before the surface breaks down.
