In trying to get a less expensive flight from Seattle to Portland, both United and Alaska's price is $146.20. Is this not price fixing. If so, how do airlines get away with it?

It's not necessarily price fixing. It could just be that one company lowered their price, so another company is matching that price in order to avoid losing marketshare.

There is price fixing, Airline 1 calls Airline 2 and they agree on a high price and then stick to it so as to stick it to the customers. And then there is price leading, where Airline 1 looks at his costs and Airline 2's price and decides they can charge less and pick up more passangers. Airline 2 sees this and doesn't want to drop lower so they match Airline 1's price.

They both end up at both airlines having the same price, but only one is price fixing.

As Robert Crandal, former CEO of American Airlines once said, 'Airlines are victims of their dumbest competitors'. One airline drops prices on a given route or accross the board, and all the others are forced to follow suit so that no one airline gains a competitive advantage. This often results in similar and even identical fares for the same routes. The real downside is individual airlines that are struggling survive end up undercharging for their services. Not that I'm complaining - I love to pay less to fly than it would cost me to drive....

All I can say is buy your paper tickets here and pay in RMB. Amazing the prices you can get once you're in the system.

I think I flew round trip coach PVG (Shanghai - Pudong) to Charlotte, NC for something like $560 or so. Thank you Air China.

And JAM, the prices do vary a bit internally in China. But not much. Still cheap to fly here.

I really am tired of United. Your service is so bad that I hope you go broke tomorrow. I still can't believe that I saw you fix two overhead bins with duct tape on the same flight. Your food sucks, your attendants don't give a damn, and why bother even listing departure times? You leave any time you want, usually 3 hours late on international flights. I hate to say it, but Air China has my business getting me over the big pond. Screw FF miles, last thing I want to do is get on another airplane...

I called the same airline twice in 20 minutes and got a 30.00 price difference which was less than what I found online for the same airline.

Glad I don't have to fly much at my own expense.
