Just saw on Yahoo news another private charter jet in Oroville ending up a smoldering wreck at the end of the runway. Thank the good Lord everyone lived as did the occupants of Dale Earnhardt's plane this last weekend that was played over and over. It got me thinking. Has anyone ever studied whether private jet travel is inherently more risky than flying on commercial airliners? The private jet industry is expanding rapidly and I would think this should be of great interest to all concerned.

I would imagine a lot of it in the private arena would correlate with adherence to and level of maintenance performed.

Also likely correlates to pilot experience.

The most dangerous part of any flight, regardless of the size of the aircraft, is the drive to the airport.

It really depends on the "private jet." Generally, corporate (part 91) operations flying with two professional pilots in jet aircraft have a similar safety record to the airlines. But "private jet" can also mean low-rent south Florida charter operator who is skirting the rules (or just operating illegally) or cousin Bob the Chevy dealer in his Piper Jetprop DLX... not so safe.

You still have a better chance of getting killed in your car on the drive to the airport.

Every airplane accident makes the news. No car or boating accidents make the news. Don't make life decisions based on want you see on the news..... cuz it's not really news.
