I have found a used BMW that needs some work but may be of interest. It is in Houston near Chimney Rock and Westheimer, within a few blocks.......

I live about 275 miles away. Is this close to someone who may be able to look at it for me before I take time off work to try to make a trip? It appears to have some questions on the front end bumper area and some scratches but you never know on internet photos. The price sounds cheap so it may be a good car for a college student (my son).

PM me if you might be able to help me out and I will give you the info.

My office is less than a mile from the car, and I have lunch in the area daily. Let me know if I can help.

    Jim,
I PM'd James yesterday about helping him but my dad was admitted to the hospital yesterday so I will not be able to help him.

    Thank's for stepping up,
    Gregg

    Thanks guys.

I have tried on several occasions to contact the seller of the car who has it posted on Auto Trader but he has not responded to phone calls or emails. This bothers me.

Also, upon closer examination of the photos he has posted the car may be rougher than I want to work with. I would not mind some slight cosmetic work, minor mechanical and maybe some tires or so but the photos reveal there may be more to it than I initially thought. The price of $3900 for a '98 BMW 528 with 80K miles sounded way too cheap. I think this may be one time the price really tells the story of the car and the seller may not want to answer the questions I raised on my attempted contacts with him

I will let you guys know if I make contact with him and still need the car looked at. You are too kind in offering to help me out. If I can return the favor, let me know......I know a good number of dealers.

James, you can't find anything in DFW, the Houston used car market is truly a different beast. Higher priced used cars that have been beaten to death. You must know someone still at BMW or a used lot to cut you some sort of Manheim deal.

Not in the TX area, but browsing Ferrarichat and came across your inquiry.

The price of $3900 for a car that needs work isn't that great of a deal. Here are some recent transactions through Manheim on 98 BMW 528 auto trans around 80k miles
DATE- LOCATION- HISTORY- PRICE- MILES- CONDITION- COLOR- MOTOR- TRANS- IN SAMPLE(calculated MMR value)
    07/24/08 ST PETE Lease $4,200 82,189 Avg BLUE 6G A Yes
    07/23/08 BAY CITI Regular $4,000 82,694 Avg GREEN 6G A Yes
    08/07/08 DARLNTON Regular $4,700 85,278 Avg BLACK 6G A Yes
    07/23/08 BAY CITI Regular $5,400 88,533 Avg BLACK 6G A Yes

The list of these cars sold is pretty big...and ranging from a 178,000 mile poor condition car selling at $1800 to an above average 63,000 mile car @ $7550

I need to look at Mannheim. I found a few around the Dallas area but some are very questionable.

Will, I have the GM at a BMW dealer where I worked before keeping his eyes open for something they do not want to keep to retail themselves. Maybe a little older or higher miles. The new car dealers generally want to get rid of anything they cannot certify unless it is a very rare example of an extremely nice car. They usually just wholesale off the others.

Again, I do appreciate the offers of help from you guys down in Houston and by all means take care of your families first. I am not in a big rush and something will show up. However, my son thinks he needs a car very soon...........
