I have a slight scratch that can only be seen in certain light and before I try a little polishing I figured I’d confirm it is painted. It looks painted…

Nevermind.... Decided to try some "ScratchX" on a microfiber and it came right out.

Pre MY08 is anodised aluminium (satin black) and often fades in the sun. Post MY08 is painted gloss black.

That sucks, the same thing happened to my wife's anodized calipers on her Cayenne Diesel. One of the downsides when we moved from her old Cayenne turbo which had factory painted calipers to the Diesel. The dealer said it was from wheel cleaner. The Cayenne only sees automated car washes, so I didn't doubt them, but now that you say the same thing happens to trim on the pre-08 Ferrari, which I'm pretty sure no one takes to an automated car wash, I'm doubting the dealer's comment.

Some types of wheel cleaner can certainly ruin coatings, but mostly it is UV exposure and general cleaning (abrasion). Finishes on these cars look good when new but there's no real care to their application nor correct surface preparation.

Touchless car washes are notorious for discoloring anodized parts. Most notably on the black Tesla window trims changing them to a rainbow or blue color. Touchless washes which most people use thinking they are safer, actually use harsher chemicals to remove the dirt. If you use those, I would recommend doubling down on whatever exterior protection you use.
