My mid 30's son has been looking for just the right air cooled Porsche for about 6 months. (He will probably end up getting something newer, because he's considering making it his DD for a year or so.) I suspect he'll end up in a water cooled early 2000's car. But he's in love with Porsches.

My older 30's daughter is leaning towards an early NSX, and is a 100% car nut.

Neither one is enamored of the newest iterations of these cars.

Other two kids could not care less. One lives in NYC doesn't own a car, the other drives a ratty 2014 Nissan Versa Note, because, "It's paid for."

So, 50% of my next generation is still thinking they're cool, which isn't a bad average.

As to the ebb and flow of the market? Every classic car market I've ever shopped in does it. We've had a big run up, now it's time for prices to cool down some over the next couple years. Then they'll level off and hold for 3-5 years, and they'll start to slide up again. Rinse and repeat seems to be how this goes.

Will that ever end for Porsche? I don't think it will for the truly unusual and iconic cars, but the everyday water cooled models are, I believe, destined to become just another used sports car.

You are not missing anything. The people who complain about maintenance are just used to maintaining an under-warranty Toyota (or, to be fair, Lexus), so sure the Porsche is going to cost more.

My Porsche AD service manager apologizes for any service invoice in the four-figure range. I told him I was psychologically trained through ownership of two Ferraris, so unless the 911 engine needs a monthly rebuild I can handle it.

Two car enthusiast offspring is a complete success.

And I agree, air-cooled 911s are unique. Nothing else gives the same experience with reasonable dependability.
