is the 911 turbo a good daily driver

911 will be waaay less to maintain than any F car. Given you are looking for a daily driver, I'd opt for a 911. If you have room for two cars, you may consider a sports sedan and an F car for the wkend.

 

Any 996 series Porsche (preferably the Turbo) are good daily drivers.

Service cost won't shock you (especially if you have a Ferrari) and easily modded !!

I use my 500+ hP Twin Turbo 3 times a week w/out any issues (other than driveway clearance since mine is lowered!)

Seems like a very good value at $65-75K. usually 12 in the LA Times classified each Sunday. Good luck.

 

31k miles on my 2004 996TT cab. 30k on my 2003 996TT. 33k on my 2001 996TT.

Just had 30k service on my 2004 996TT cabriolet and it costs $ 875.00 at dealership. The 15k service was like a $ 175.00. The only issues have been a wiper blade and a swith for the dash lights. I had a psoiler malfunction on my 2001 996TT. No engine or drivetrain problems on all three. Great daily driver. I am now splitting it up with a Ferrari and two other cars just to keep from putting so many miles on my Porsche.

 

You want a daily driver and you want to be another fish in the sea - Buy a Porsche. Look at what the owners are telling you.

It's a no brainer car but consider this; what you save in maintenance cost - you make up when you are done driving it and go to sell it. People seem to forget that your $90K used 996 Turbo will be worth $50K in 2 years with 30K + miles on it.

Add this up and the maintenance of a Ferrari and the exclusivity of it makes it a better buy.

You want to different and have a car with a soul - buy a Ferrari

I drove a 2002 911TT hard for the past three years as a daily driver. Not a single issue at all. But, it lost its excitement after a few years--too refined. It is a fabulous car for your purpose and is one of the best values in the sports car market right now. Get a X-50.

I turned it back in after the lease end and will have my 2006 430F1 by month's end. My S6 Avant will now by my daily driver--another fantastic car by the way with lots of low end torque and excellent handling (for a station wagon).

 

Porsche needs to do more to distinguish the TT from the Carrera 2 and 4--I am glad I chose to get the F430

 

I have a 2003 Twin Turbo X50 and use it exactly how the poster wants, a daily driver. It is exactly that, a daily driver. I go 100mph when its dry or in the rain. I have had it for 2 yrs, and the dealer still doesn't even have an oil change scheduled for it. It is not a ferrari, it is not as exciting, but it is a stable, everyday, daily driver. I traded my SL600 for it and have not looked back. I completely agree with Morgie's previous post about the evaluation of it.

 

Fantastic cars, the turbos are very quick yet almost too docile. They don't stir the soul like an F-Car, but neither do they stir your wallet during service.

 

Doug H good job , seeing a person really put miles on the car enjoying it . I still wonder why so many Ferrari drivers do not put miles on their cars . When was the last time you say a 2004 360 with 30K miles or a 2002 or even a 2001 , a bunch of garage queens with people afraid to put miles on the cars kind of sad .

lawwdog put 30K miles on your 360 and see if it does not also effect the resale ......................................

911 I've always longed for. The turbo is one hell of a car, but my choice has always been the GT3, but then again, probably not the best for daily driving.

I just had a question for all ferrari owners. I hope this is not a stupid question, and if it is, please excuse my ignorance. But what is the exact definition of "soul". Is this refering to the sensory experiece- noise, the feel, the look, the interior etc.? Would a GT3 with a nice sounding loud exhaust system be considered to have "soul"? I have an NSX with a very nice sounding exhaust and intake system, engine & handling are very responsive and the feel is very race car like. When i drive the car, i would have to say that it does stir my blood and gives me a sensory experience. I've also had the opportunity to ride in a 360 modena and F355 both with tubi exhaust systems, and those cars also gave me that feeling along with a gallardo that i drove. Is this the "soul" that you guys are referring to?

 

Jimmy540i with 40k on his 04 360 sounds like he is a rare breed of Ferrari driver ......................... same with you Senna1994 I was beginning to wonder if there were people who really put miles on these things . I had read about a guy in Utah who has 25k miles on his Enzo he sounds like another one who is really enjoying the car and not letting it sit in the garage . I have always had Porsches and is is nothing to se people putting 15 to 20K miles a year on the car but in the Ferrari world it seems to be different .

 

996TT is the ultimate daily driver. Good looking (but not overly showy), rare enough to feel exclusive (have yet to see another one on the road in Houston after 4 months), reliable (design has been in work for 40 years), great performer, can upgrade to 500 hp easily with a chip and exhaust to keep up in the HP race, comfortable, has rear seats for kids or short trips with adults.

 

Prices are stablizing on the 996TT and will stablize in the $ 60k range unless wrecked or having 60,000 or 80,000 miles on it. You could buy a decent 01 for about $ 73k now and that same 01 was about $ 75k this time last year. All Porsche turbos have done basically the same. The fall at first, but seem to stabilize over time and bunch up with previous model turbos.

What were 2001 360 Modenas commonly selling for in 2001. What was their sticker. What is one worth today with 3,000 miles. What about one with 35,000 miles.

 

Lamborghini dealers have good end of year leases.. especially now with the new 2006's having the update..

Last fall you could lease an 04 for 2k a month.. 15k down, other details. I recently saw a dealer ad for end of year 05's leasing at 1700 a month, 10k down. They were both 60 month leases, but only had a 2 month payment ending penalty (not bad).

The lease I know about allowed 12,000 miles a year. You want a hot daily driver, awd for the snow, and a "known" depreciation.. Lease an 05 Gallardo.

 

I've sold used P-cars since 1989 and used to run a franchised dealer back in the early 90's for a few years.

They are the best damn daily driver "exotic" sports cars on the planet.........bar none.

One thing issue to solve is the "is the car too much for just puttering around town"? It's a very fast car and can get into trouble very quickly. Some days you're lazy or just don't want to go to work and those are the days you'll want to take the Jetta. If you're not in the mood to drive it, the rough ride, the sharp gas pedal and the whole reason you bought the car will go against you. Just think about it.

hell ya it is, saw one today plowing its way thru snow...and the other week as well...and they just look so good while doing it....

 

Not a problem, compared to alot of other really high performance cars. I used to use my GT2 to commute to NYC once in a while, and loved its ability to literally rip out time and space when needed. And that car was far more of an animal than a standard TT, given the suspension, the racing seats, roll bar, and very low ground clearance, as well as the noise from the aftermarket exhaust. It did attract a little unnecessary attention from the constabulary in that form and if I owned one again, I would try to find the quietest exhaust system for it that still gave the performance advantages of the aftermarket ones. The definition of 'soul' and the tactile difference in driving between a Porsche and a Ferrari~ that will require more explanation.... As to the Gallardo, yes, I think alot of people are able to use those as DD's as well, but part of the joy of a DD is not having to worry so much about where you park it and drawing unnecessary attention. That was, in some ways the beauty and the curse of the Porsche for me. Even though it was a special car, to most it looked like every other modern 911, with a wing, yes, a little lower and more aggressive, but still not startling. The bling is good until you don't want to be noticed, eg, try driving and parking a Lambo without having a discussion with the 12 people that show up instantly to watch.

 

Just like everyone said, the turbo is the best everyday super car to own. Maintenance has been minimal, just too off the oil and that's about it. I use my turbo S every chance I get and even though, it might feel a little bland next to Ferraris, it more than makes up for it with torque and grunt that'll give your neck muscles an excersice.

The only thing is to let it warm up completely before getting into it and letting it idle for two minutes before shutdown to let those hard working turbos cool down a bit.

Other than that, it's one of the most under-rated super cars out there.

 

If your ordering up the new 911 TT coming out then my suggestion is for the dual clutch sequenatial option.

This new technology transcents any single clutch sequential performance and civility.

Lots of good 911 tt's from the last generation available as well.

I imagine its a great car to own as well especially as daily drivers
